Material comparison

Steel Grating Material Comparison

Open mesh in stainless is bought for one reason: a floor that must be hosed clean, drain through, and never depend on a coating. Buyers searching stainless steel mesh flooring or stainless steel open grid flooring usually mean exactly this product — an SS304 / SS316 panel with full drainage. Here is how the four common grating materials compare before you commit.

Material Corrosion behavior Typical environments Hygiene & cleanability Relative cost Surface finish
Q235B carbon steel Coating-dependent — unprotected steel corrodes in wet service Dry indoor platforms, warehouse floors Coating seams trap soil; not for washdown zones Budget baseline Black mill finish, primer on request
Q235B + hot-dip galvanized Zinc barrier after fabrication, ASTM A123 / ISO 1461 reference Outdoor walkways, municipal trench covers Good outdoors; coating is not made for caustic washdown Budget plus coating Hot-dip galvanized after fabrication
SS304 stainless Corrosion-resistant in its own right — no coating to apply or maintain Food plants, dairies, breweries, general washdown areas Open mesh flushes clean in place; nothing to blister or flake Premium vs coated carbon Pickled and passivated
SS316 stainless Adds chloride resistance for brine, salts and coastal air Pharma wet areas, chemical processing, salt-splash floors Same cleanability; holds up to salt-based cleaning agents Highest of the four Pickled and passivated

Open mesh vs solid plate

Drainage-Through Flooring vs Solid Stainless Plate

In a washdown zone the floor is cleaned several times a day, so where the water goes decides everything. Open mesh lets it fall through; solid plate holds it until someone removes it. An honest side-by-side:

Dimension Open mesh Solid stainless plate
DrainageWashdown water, foam and spills fall straight through to the drain belowWater stays on the surface until the floor is sloped or squeegeed
Standing waterNo pooling underfoot — the walking surface never holds a wet filmPuddles collect on flat panels between cleans
Panel weightOpen construction carries less steel, so panels are noticeably lighter per m²Heavier per m² and needs stronger support framing
CleaningFlush in place — hose the surface and everything drainsNeeds falls to drain or wet vacuuming after each wash
When the other winsSmall parts, product or tools must not fall through — specify close mesh to 11 / 11 mm insteadRolling carts, small components or a sealed surface requirement
SS304 / SS316 bearing bars water falls through drain below

Nothing pools, nothing coats

The mesh is the drainage: liquids pass through the walking surface and leave via the channel below, so the floor dries itself between wash cycles. And because SS304 / SS316 resists corrosion by grade rather than by coating, there is no paint layer to blister, flake or contaminate the zone above the drain.

Hygiene zones

The Zones That Ask for Open Mesh Stainless

A drainage-through floor is specified by zone, not by price list. Each zone below cleans differently — here is what the floor has to survive, and how open mesh stainless answers.

Food & beverage washdown

SS304 open mesh around processing lines: daily hose-down and caustic cleaning agents drain straight through the floor into the channel, with no coating to blister, flake or soil the product zone.

Floor demands: flush cleanability, resistance to cleaning chemicals.

Pharmaceutical wet areas

Spills pass through immediately instead of spreading across a sealed surface; corrosion-resistant stainless keeps the floor free of coating flakes and corrosion stains that audits flag.

Floor demands: spill-through drainage, no coating to shed.

Chemical & process areas

SS316 where brine, chlorides and process chemicals strip zinc coatings fast. The section keeps its strength with no protective layer to inspect, repair or re-apply.

Floor demands: chloride resistance, zero coating maintenance.

One material system

Continue the cleanable line under the floor: pair SS open mesh panels with stainless channel drains so floor and drainage are one material, not a mixed-metal joint that traps soil.

Floor demands: grating and channel as one cleanable line.

An honest note on hygiene rules

Hygiene regulations differ market by market, and we do not claim food-contact certifications for our flooring. Our materials are suitable for washdown areas, and suitability statements are provided on request — your hygiene authority or auditor makes the final call for your plant.

Why specify SS open mesh

Why Buyers Specify Stainless Open Mesh Flooring

Made to spec, any size

Welded or press-locked panels cut and banded to your drawings — panel size, mesh, grade and banding all to specification, from small trial orders to full programs, with free drawing review inside the 24-hour quote.

Drains through — built for wet sites

SS304 for routine washdown, SS316 for chloride service: corrosion resistance lives in the grade, not in a coating. Water leaves through the mesh, so the walking surface stays visible, dry-edged and safe underfoot.

Factory-direct, no middlemen

Buy from the workshop that cuts, welds and inspects the panels — FOB Tianjin as standard, itemized quote on request, and mill test certificates (EN 10204 Type 3.1) with every shipment.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Is your stainless open mesh flooring certified for food plants?

We do not claim food-contact certifications. Our SS304 and SS316 open mesh flooring is built from materials suitable for washdown areas, and we provide suitability statements on request, alongside mill test certificates (EN 10204 Type 3.1) with every shipment. Final acceptance sits with your hygiene authority or auditor.

Open mesh or close mesh - what falls through?

Open mesh at 30 / 40 / 60 mm centers drains washdown water instantly and lets small debris fall through to the drain below. Where nothing may drop through, press-locked close mesh down to 11 / 11 mm keeps debris on the walking surface while liquids still drain.

What is the lead time for stainless open mesh flooring?

Samples ship in 5–7 working days and mass production runs 15–25 working days after drawing confirmation. Rush production in 10–15 days is possible with a surcharge — ask in your quote.
