Wheel-load guide
Sizing a Driveway Drain Grate to the Wheels Above It
A driveway grate is the one drain cover on site that vehicles cross every day, on purpose. This page is about the grate itself — the bearing bars, the mesh and the edges — not the channel below it. Channel bodies, outlets and kerbside placement are covered on our metal driveway channel drain and channel drain for driveway pages. Grates below are sized by the load class you name, referenced to EN 124:
| Load class (referenced to EN 124) | What crosses the run | Recommended bearing bars | Openings |
|---|---|---|---|
| A15 | Foot traffic only, cycle lanes, garden edges | 20×3 to 25×3 mm | 11 / 11 mm close mesh — heel-safe |
| B125 | Private driveways, car parks, residential aprons | 30×3 to 32×5 mm | 30 mm centers, banded ends |
| C250 | Residential streets, kerbside runs, delivery access | 40×4 to 50×5 mm | 30 / 40 mm centers, banded ends |
| D400 | Truck crossings, yards, public roads, forecourts | 50×5 to 100×8 mm | 30 / 40 mm centers, banded ends |
Class figures are referenced to EN 124; the bar sizes are our production recommendations inside the 20×3 – 100×8 mm range we build every day. Full load tables for your exact span and axle load are provided with your quote.

Grate construction
Heavy Bearing Bars, Heel-Safe Edges, One Grate
1 · Heavy bearing bars
Bearing bars run across the channel opening and carry the wheel; heavier bars from 50×5 up to 100×8 mm take truck crossings without permanent set. Bar spacing of 30 / 40 / 60 mm keeps flow high while the geometry stays wheel-proof.
2 · Heel-safe mesh where people cross
Where the run crosses a walkway or front door, we build the grate on our in-house press line with 11 / 11 mm close mesh — openings small enough that heels, paws and bike wheels cannot drop through, with the flow an outdoor drain grate still needs.
3 · Banded edges, galvanized by default
Banded ends close the cut bar ends and stop the panel from rocking under repeated wheel passes. Hot-dip galvanizing to ASTM A123 / ISO 1461 is the default finish for driveway duty — salt spray, snow melt and wet leaves do the rest of the testing out there.
Why specify steel
Why Specifiers Choose a Steel Driveway Drain Grate
Heavy duty under truck wheels
One-piece welded construction spreads wheel loads across the full panel — from family cars to delivery trucks. Tell us the crossing traffic and we build the grate for it, no markup for guessing wrong.
High-flow stormwater grating
Open-mesh stormwater grating sheds downpours fast, so the run drains before water sheets across the driveway. Leaves and grit pass through or sit on top where a rake can reach them.
Any length, cut to your run
Custom grates in any length, panel by panel along the run — standard widths for common channels or fully cut to your drawings, with free drawing review inside the 24-hour quote.
Applications
Where Driveway Drain Grates Work
Anywhere a paved surface has to shed water while taking traffic — the same grate geometry scales from a residential driveway to a truck yard.
Residential driveways
B125-class grates across the apron and garage approach, galvanized against road salt.
Parking lots & access roads
Continuous grating runs along entry lanes, sized to the traffic that actually crosses.
Kerbside & road crossings
C250 / D400 duty grates at kerb inlets and road crossings, banded and locked down.
Yards & forecourts
Truck-yard trench runs with 50×5 mm and heavier bars, open mesh that shrugs off grit.

Materials & test documents
Every heat of Q235B, SS304 or SS316 enters production with its mill test certificate verified at goods-in — the first of our five QC stages. Driveway grates leave with documentation, not promises:
- Mill test certificate to EN 10204 Type 3.1
- Factory inspection report with every shipment
- Declaration of Conformity prepared per order destination
Standards & compliance
Produced to Recognized Standards — Documents on Request
EN 124 load classes
Grates produced to the class you name, referenced to EN 124 — A15 pedestrian zones through D400 truck crossings.
ASTM A123 / ISO 1461 HDG
Coating thickness checked by sampling on every galvanized batch before driveway grates are released.
CE & SGS tested
Certified & tested, reports on request — we show documents you can verify, not a certificate wall.

FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
What EN 124 class does a driveway drain grate need?
For cars only, B125 is the usual starting point; where trucks or delivery vehicles cross the run, C250 or D400 applies. Classes are referenced to EN 124 — we size the bearing bars to the class you name, so tell us the axle load in your quote request.
Can a driveway drain grate be made heel-safe?
Yes. Where pedestrians cross the run, we can build the grate on our press line with 11 / 11 mm close mesh, so heels, paws and bike wheels cannot drop through. Welded panels with 30 / 40 / 60 mm centers remain the choice for wheel-only zones where high flow matters more.
What is the default finish and lead time for driveway grates?
Hot-dip galvanizing to ASTM A123 / ISO 1461 is the default finish for outdoor driveway duty, with coating thickness checked on every galvanized batch. Samples ship in 5–7 working days and production runs 15–25 working days after drawing confirmation, galvanizing included.
