Bearing Bars + Cross Bars: How the Panel Is Built
Bar grating is two member types doing two jobs: parallel bearing bars carry the load in the direction of the span, cross bars lock them into a rigid grid. The cross bar profile is the main specification choice — here is how the options compare.
| Dimension | Twisted Square19W4 default | Round | Press-Locked Bars |
|---|---|---|---|
| Profile | Square bar twisted along its axis — corners stand proud of the weld on every rotation | Smooth round rod seated in a forged weld collar | Solid flat bars notched into the bearing bars — no welding |
| How it is joined | Resistance-forged to every bearing bar on our electro-forging line | Forged or swaged, depending on the panel type | Mechanically interlocked on the in-house press line |
| Transverse stiffness | High — the square section resists bending and cannot spin in the joint | Moderate — suits pedestrian and light panels | Very high — flat bars tie the full panel width |
| Debris behavior | Open grid sheds debris, ice and spill-through; edges self-scrape | Round profile drains water and sludge freely | Dense contact points can hold debris in close mesh |
| Typical duty | The standard cross bar of welded bar grating — platforms, walkways, traffic decks | Swage-locked panels and lighter welded floors | Trench covers, tree pits, fine architectural floors |
| Availability at Dengtai | Standard on welded panels, per specification | Per specification | In-house — press-lock machine |

How panels are made
From Bearing Bars to Finished Bar Grating
1 · Bearing bars take the load
Flat bars from 20×3 mm to 100×8 mm, plain or serrated, set at 30, 40 or 60 mm centers. They run across the span — the panel carries nothing if they are specified the wrong way round, so drawings always mark the load direction.
2 · Cross bars lock the grid
Twisted square or round cross bars are fed between the bearing bars and every intersection is pressure-forged in one pass — one solid panel with no clips that can loosen. On the 19W4 pattern they sit on 102 mm (4 in) centers.
3 · Cut, band and galvanize
Panels are cut to size up to 1.25 m × 6 m, edges banded flat, then hot-dip galvanized to ASTM A123 / ISO 1461 at a certified partner near our mill — typically 2–3 days, already counted inside your production window.
Why specify bar grating
Steel Bar Grating, Built to Your Specification
19W4 or fully custom spacing
Stock designations like 19W4 — bearing bars on 30 mm (1-3/16 in) centers, cross bars on 102 mm (4 in) centers — or custom spacing straight from your drawings. Both come off the same in-house lines.
Serrated or plain bearing bars
Serrated teeth grip wet or oily soles where plain tops would slide; plain bars roll easier under carts and trolleys. Specify per area — mixed serrated and plain panels can travel in one order.
Made to order, sampled fast
Bar grating is cut and banded to your drawings — free drawing review inside the 24-hour quote, then a sample panel ships in 5–7 working days. Small trial orders are welcome.
Applications
Where Bar Grating Works
Open bar construction lets water, light and debris fall through while the bearing bars carry the traffic — the default flooring surface across US industrial specs.
Platforms & mezzanines
Load-rated bar panels for maintenance decks and storage floors — specify by span, not by guesswork.
Walkways & catwalks
Open mesh sheds rain and spills; serrated bars add grip on exposed routes.
Trench & drainage covers
Bar covers for trenches and gullies — heel-proof openings optional for public areas.
Stair treads & landings
Welded bar treads with serrated or plain surfaces and banded ends; matching landings in one order.

US designations in context: 19W4 places bearing bars on 30 mm (1-3/16 in) centers with cross bars on 102 mm (4 in) centers. We quote in millimeters and confirm the designation equivalent on your drawings — load tables on request.
Materials & test documents
Every heat of Q235B, SS304 or SS316 enters production with its mill test certificate verified at goods-in — the first of our five QC stages. Bar grating panels leave with documentation, not promises:
- Mill test certificate to EN 10204 Type 3.1
- Factory inspection report with every shipment
- Declaration of Conformity prepared per order destination
Standards & compliance
Produced to Recognized Standards — Documents on Request
ANSI / NAAMM MBG 531
Welded bar grating produced to MBG 531 reference practice, with weld inspection on our five-stage QC plan.
ASTM A123 / ISO 1461 HDG
Galvanized coating thickness checked by sampling on every galvanized batch before bar grating panels are released.
CE & SGS tested
Certified & tested, reports on request — we show documents you can verify, not a certificate wall.

FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
What is bar grating?
A grid of parallel bearing bars joined by cross bars at every intersection. Bearing bars are the load-carrying members and always run in the direction of the span; cross bars hold the grid square and carry transverse loads. Panels are welded or press-locked, then cut and banded to size.
What does 19W4 mean in bar grating?
It is the common US designation for welded bar grating: the number 19 places bearing bars on 30 mm (1-3/16 in) centers, the letter W marks welded construction, and the trailing 4 places cross bars on 102 mm (4 in) centers. We build 19W4 equivalents and quote in millimeters, confirming the equivalent in your drawings.
Can I get load tables with my bar grating quote?
Yes — load tables are available on request and ship with your itemized quote within 24 hours. Send spans, loads and traffic type, and we will confirm the bearing bar size and cross bar spacing in the same reply. Samples follow in 5–7 working days.
