What the term means

Perforated vs Open Bar Grating — an Honest Comparison

Perforated grating is holes in a sheet, not bars in a grid. It starts as steel sheet — perforated metal grating panels carry a regular pattern of punched round, square or slot holes, which is why the surface is flat, uniform and mostly closed. Our own stock program is open steel grating: electro-forged welded panels and press-locked close mesh. Perforated steel grating is therefore a derived format for us — fabricated and quoted to your drawings, with no hole-pattern list to pull stock from. Here is what each construction actually does, so you can specify the right one.

Format A — perforated sheet panel

One steel sheet with punched holes, cut and edged to your panel drawing. Small parts stay on the deck, air and light still move, and water drains slowly through the hole pattern. Hole size, pitch and open area follow your specification.

Format B — perforated plate over open grating

A perforated sheet fastened over an open welded or press-locked panel from our own lines. You keep the load section of real bar grating and add a holed walking surface. Load sharing and open area are assessed per project and quoted as one composite panel.

Need containment but prefer our in-house lines? Close-mesh grating is the nearest equivalent we make ourselves. If water must drain freely, welded open mesh is the honest answer. Not sure which format fits? Send your drawings — we will spec it inside the 24-hour quote.

How the formats are built

From Drawing to Perforated Panel

punched hole pattern to your drawing

1 · Pattern and sheet on the drawing

Hole shape, size, pitch and open area arrive with your drawing, together with sheet thickness and grade — because there is no stock hole-pattern program behind this page, every perforated panel is defined before it is made.

sheet open grating combined panel — per drawing

2 · Cut, edge and combine

Sheets are cut to panel sizes on the workshop saw and plasma path, then edged or banded to your detail. For combined panels, the perforated sheet is fastened over an open welded or press-locked panel made in-house — one composite, engineered per project.

3 · Hot-dip galvanizing

Carbon steel panels go to a certified galvanizing partner near our mill for ASTM A123 / ISO 1461 hot-dip galvanizing — typically 2–3 days, already counted inside your production window.

Why specify perforated

Why Buyers Specify Perforated Metal Grating

Flat top, even surface

A punched sheet gives a level, uniform walking surface with no bars to bridge — the flatness buyers mean when they ask for a flat-top panel. Trolley wheels and small casters roll across it cleanly.

Containment with airflow

Hole size sets what passes. Small parts and spill solids stay on the deck above occupied space, while air, light and moisture still move through the pattern — the middle ground open mesh cannot offer.

Custom to drawings, small MOQ

Every perforated steel grating order is made to your pattern and panel schedule with free drawing review, and small trial orders are welcome — sample panels ship in 5–7 working days.

Applications

Where Perforated Steel Grating Earns Its Place

The honest rule: specify a holed sheet when small items must stay on the deck and only slow drainage is needed. Specify open grating when something must fall straight through it. These are the duties where the perforated format wins.

Floors above occupied space

Mezzanines and storage decks over work areas — fasteners and small parts stay on the deck instead of dropping through an open mesh.

Trolley & cart routes

Continuous flat decking for wheeled traffic on platforms and walkways where open bar spacing would fight small casters.

Ventilated decks & screens

Machine guards, drip trays and ventilated panels where airflow matters more than full drainage — cut and edged to your openings.

Wet areas — use open grating

Where water must run off fast, small holes clog. Our trench grating and welded open mesh lines are the right answer — we will say so in the quote.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Is perforated grating the same as open steel bar grating?

No. Perforated grating is sheet-based: holes are punched through a steel sheet in a regular pattern, instead of bearing bars and cross bars forming an open grid. The holes are far smaller than grating mesh, so the surface is mostly closed. For us it is a derived format — perforated metal grating and perforated steel grating panels are quoted to your drawings, and we run no stock hole-pattern program.

Should I choose perforated panels or open bar grating?

Choose open bar grating wherever water, oil, snow or debris must fall straight through — trench covers, outdoor walkways, washdown floors. Choose perforated sheet panels where small parts and spill solids must stay on a flat deck while air and light still pass. If you need containment but prefer our in-house lines, close-mesh grating down to 11 / 11 mm is the nearest equivalent, and we will say so in your quote.

What is the lead time for perforated grating orders?

Samples ship in 5–7 working days and mass production runs 15–25 working days after drawing confirmation, both including hot-dip galvanizing. Rush production in 10–15 days is possible with a surcharge — ask in your quote.
