The duty ladder

What Heavy Duty Grating Actually Means

Heavy duty is not a sticker on a quotation — it is a set of changes to the panel. As traffic climbs from foot to trolley to forklift, three things move together: the bearing bar section, the bar centers, and how the span is handled. Here is the ladder, and where our real manufacturing range sits on it.

What changes Pedestrian duty Industrial duty Heavy duty
Traffic it is built forFoot traffic, occasional light cartsHand trolleys, pallet trucks, steady foot trafficForklifts, delivery trucks, crane set-downs
Bearing bar sectionSmaller sections of our 20×3 mm to 100×8 mm rangeMid-range sections of the same rangeToward the top of the range — up to 100×8 mm
Bar centers60 mm centers are usually enough30 / 40 mm centers tighten the mesh30 / 40 mm centers, matched to the wheel footprint
Span handlingLonger clear spans carry light loadsSpans checked against rolling loadsSpans kept short, bearing bars run with the traffic direction
Load framingUniform foot load and a person's point loadRolling light wheels plus stacked goodsConcentrated wheel loads with braking and turning forces
Typical useWalkways, catwalks, roof pathsPlant floors, mezzanines, platform deckingForklift aisles, dock approaches, roadway trench covers

Not sure where your project sits on the ladder? Send your drawings — we will spec it inside the 24-hour quote. Load and deflection tables for your exact span and bar selection are provided with your quote, not guessed from a generic chart.

How duty is built in

Three Changes That Make a Panel Heavy Duty

bearing bar section grows with duty 20×3 mm mid range up to 100×8 mm

1 · Bar section grows first

Depth and thickness of the bearing bar are the primary levers. Heavy duty steel grating is built toward the top of our 20×3 mm to 100×8 mm range, so the same footprint of panel simply contains more steel where the wheel lands.

wheel rolls support clear span

2 · Spans shorten and align

Under a wheel, span is the enemy. Heavy duty panels keep clear spans short, add intermediate supports where drawings allow, and run the bearing bars in the direction of traffic so every wheel crosses several bars at once.

clip fixing banded edge closes the panel

3 · Edges and fixings lock it down

Banded edges close the cut ends of the bars so wheels cannot peel a bar loose, and a fixing layout ships with every order — clip fixings are sourced companion items we supply alongside the panels.

High load that holds

Bar sections up to 100×8 mm on 30 / 40 mm centers carry forklift traffic without permanent set — heavy duty metal grating sized to your span and wheel, not guessed. Load test data available per batch.

Long-life surfaces

Hot-dip galvanized to ASTM A123 / ISO 1461 for outdoor docks and roadway covers, or SS304 / SS316 stainless where washdown and chlorides attack carbon steel — coating thickness checked on every galvanized batch.

Built by drawing, with MTC

Custom heavy duty panels cut and banded to your drawings in Q235B or stainless — free drawing review, itemized FOB Tianjin quote, and a mill test certificate to EN 10204 Type 3.1 with every order.

Applications

Where Heavy Duty Grating Works

Anywhere wheels meet steel flooring: the same open mesh that sheds water and debris, upgraded to bar sections and spans that take concentrated wheel loads day after day.

Forklift aisles & docks

Warehouse aisles, dock approaches and apron slabs where trucks turn and brake.

Heavy plant platforms

Machine platforms and mezzanines carrying equipment, skids and stored loads.

Roadway & driveway covers

Trench and drainage covers at kerbs, yard gates and crossing points under wheel loads.

Heavy-traffic stairs

Stair treads and access stairs in the same duty class, serrated or plain, with nosing.

Materials & test documents

Every heat of Q235B, SS304 or SS316 enters production with its mill test certificate verified at goods-in — the first of our five QC stages. Heavy duty panels leave with documentation, not promises:

  • Mill test certificate to EN 10204 Type 3.1
  • Factory inspection report with every shipment
  • Declaration of Conformity prepared per order destination

Standards & compliance

Produced to Recognized Standards — Documents on Request

ANSI / NAAMM MBG 532-24

Heavy duty grating produced to the MBG 532 reference practice, with weld-point inspection on our five-stage QC plan.

ASTM A123 / ISO 1461 HDG

Galvanized coating thickness checked by sampling on every galvanized batch before panels are released.

CE & SGS tested

Certified & tested, reports on request — load test data available per batch. We show documents you can verify, not a certificate wall.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What makes a grating heavy duty?

Duty is a combination of bearing bar section, bar centers and clear span — not a marketing label. As traffic moves from foot to trolley to forklift, we move up the 20×3 mm to 100×8 mm bar range, tighten centers to 30 / 40 mm and shorten or re-orient spans so the bars carry the wheel load. Send your load data and we confirm the selection in the 24-hour quote.

Welded or press-locked — which suits heavy loads?

Both are made in-house. Electro-forged welded grating is the default for wheel loads and wide spans because every bearing-bar / cross-bar intersection is pressure-forged into one panel; press-locked panels suit dense, uniform loads and close mesh. Tell us the traffic and the span and we recommend one in your quote.

What is the lead time for heavy duty grating?

Samples ship in 5–7 working days and mass production runs 15–25 working days after drawing confirmation, both including hot-dip galvanizing. Rush production in 10–15 days is possible with a surcharge — ask in your quote.
