Steel Grating Material Comparison
This page is the grade page: Q235B, the Chinese structural carbon standard behind most welded and press-locked bar grating. Choose by environment first, cost second — and keep the cost column qualitative: real numbers arrive as an itemized quote, FOB Tianjin.
| Material | Corrosion behavior | Typical environment | Relative material cost | Documents & delivery |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Q235B carbon steel | Bare steel needs paint, shelter or a zinc coating where water stands | Indoor platforms, mezzanines, warehouse floors | Lowest of the four | MTC per heat; fastest turnaround |
| Q235B + hot-dip galvanized | Zinc coating metallurgically bonded — corrosion-resistant outdoors | Outdoor walkways, trench covers, plant yards | Low to mid | MTC per heat; HDG adds 2–3 days inside the production window |
| SS304 stainless | Corrosion-resistant across most washdown duties | Food plants, dairies, general chemical areas | Higher | MTC per heat; same production window |
| SS316 stainless | Strongest of the four against chlorides | Marine, coastal, heavy chemical exposure | Highest | MTC per heat; same production window |

Process compatibility
One Grade, Two In-House Processes
1 · Grade and bar selection
Q235B flat bearing bars from 20×3 mm to 100×8 mm, plain or serrated, at 30 / 40 / 60 mm centers — heavy-duty duty simply steps up bar depth and weight. Every bundle arrives with the heat number that will appear on your certificate.
2 · Weld or press-lock
The same Q235B bar runs on both in-house processes — electro-forged welding for open mesh at heavy loads, or press-locking for close mesh down to 11/11 mm. No third-party panel sourcing, so the heat trail never breaks.
3 · Black or galvanized finish
Q235B is a galvanizer-friendly carbon steel: black panels leave bare or oil-protected, while hot-dip galvanizing to ASTM A123 / ISO 1461 runs at a certified partner near our mill — typically 2–3 days, already counted inside your production window, coating thickness sampled per batch.
Why specify Q235
Why Engineers Specify Q235 Steel Grating
The structural carbon standard
Q235B is China's standard structural carbon steel — specified by yield strength, impact-verified at the B quality tier. It is the workhorse grade behind welded and press-locked bar grating for platforms, walkways and trench covers.
Mill cert on every batch
Q235 grating plus mill cert is the default here: mill test certificates (EN 10204 Type 3.1) with every shipment, one per heat, with the measured chemical composition and mechanical properties your engineering team can audit.
Factory-direct, any size, small MOQ
No middlemen between your drawings and the lines: Q235 grating cut to your sizes from small MOQ, quoted itemized within 24 hours and shipped FOB Tianjin. Wholesale and trial orders run on the same traceable grade.
Applications
Where Q235 Steel Grating Works
Q235B earns its keep where the structure stays dry, painted or sheltered and load capacity leads the specification — with a galvanized variant one finish decision away.
Heavy-duty plant flooring
Deeper bars and closer centers take trolley and wheel loads on plant floors.
Mezzanines & catwalks
Open mesh floors that pass light and drop spills — rated by span, not guesswork.
Trench & pit covers
Covers for cable trenches and indoor pits; order HDG where washdown reaches the floor.
Stair treads & landings
Q235B treads, serrated or plain, banded and drilled ready to bolt.
Wet or outdoor duty? Q235B galvanized steel grating pairs the same traceable grade with a bonded zinc coating — see the hot-dip galvanized grating page.
Grade & specifications
Q235B: What the Grade Means in a Panel
| Parameter | Range |
|---|---|
| Material grade | Q235B structural carbon steel, the Chinese structural standard |
| Yield strength | 235 MPa minimum, in the common bar thicknesses grating uses |
| Bearing bar | 20×3 mm to 100×8 mm, plain or serrated |
| Bar spacing | 30 / 40 / 60 mm centers |
| Panel size | Up to 1.25 m wide × 6 m long |
| Finishes | Black (bare or oil-protected) or hot-dip galvanized (ASTM A123 / ISO 1461) |
| Certificates | mill test certificates (EN 10204 Type 3.1) with every shipment |
Reading the Q235B designation
The Q marks a structural carbon steel classed by yield strength; the 235 is the minimum yield strength in megapascals at the bar thicknesses grating uses. The B is the quality tier — impact-verified where grade A carries no impact requirement — which is why Q235B, not Q235A, is the usual call for structural flooring.
In a panel that translates to a ductile, forgiving steel: it welds without preheat at grating bar sizes, presses cleanly in close-mesh tooling, and takes hot-dip galvanizing well — clean carbon steel is exactly what a zinc kettle wants to bond to.
Specifying against international codes? Q235B is broadly comparable to ASTM A36 and S235JR structural carbon grades; comparable grades can be sourced to project spec — confirm equivalents in your quote rather than accepting silent substitution. The MTC gives your team the measured values to check against the standard you design to.
Material proof
Mill Test Certificates (EN 10204 3.1)
You receive mill test certificates (EN 10204 Type 3.1) with every shipment. Type 3.1 is an inspection document issued by the mill's own authorized inspection representative, independent of sales — it certifies the chemical composition and the mechanical properties of the specific heat your bars were rolled from, traceable by heat number from ladle to panel.
What Type 3.1 certifies
Two things, for the heat itself — not a brochure about the grade: the chemical composition from the heat analysis, and the mechanical properties, yield strength, tensile strength and elongation, as measured on test specimens.
Traceable to the heat
One certificate per heat: the heat number printed on your MTC is the heat number on the bar bundles that entered production. If an auditor pulls a panel years later, the paper trail points back to one ladle of steel.
Verified at goods-in — QC stage 1
Stage one of our five QC stages: heat number, chemistry and mechanical values are checked against Q235B before a single bar is cut. Bars with missing or mismatched paperwork do not enter production.
| Your MTC lists | What you can check |
|---|---|
| Heat number & grade | Q235B, one heat per certificate, matched to the bundle tags |
| Chemical composition | Heat analysis — carbon, manganese, silicon, sulphur, phosphorus |
| Mechanical properties | Yield strength (the 235 in Q235B), tensile strength, elongation |
| Document type | EN 10204 Type 3.1, issued by the mill's authorized inspection representative |

FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
What does an EN 10204 Type 3.1 mill test certificate certify?
The certificate confirms the chemical composition and the mechanical properties of the exact steel heat your bars came from — the heat analysis plus yield strength, tensile strength and elongation — so every panel is traceable back to the mill ladle. You receive mill test certificates (EN 10204 Type 3.1) with every shipment, and each one is verified at our goods-in inspection, stage one of five QC stages, before production starts.
Is Q235B equivalent to ASTM A36 or S235JR?
Q235B is the Chinese structural carbon steel standard and is broadly comparable to those grades in strength, ductility and weldability — but the equivalence call belongs to the specifying engineer, not the supplier. Confirm equivalents in your quote: the mill test certificate lists the actual heat analysis and mechanical values so your team can check them against the standard you are designing to.
Which finish should I choose for Q235 steel grating?
Black (uncoated) panels suit indoor duty, site painting or immediate fabrication and can ship with oil protection for export. Hot-dip galvanizing to ASTM A123 / ISO 1461 is the default for outdoor or washdown exposure — it runs at a certified galvanizing partner near our mill, typically 2–3 days, already inside the 15–25 working-day production window.
