Steel Grating Material Comparison — Where Corten Fits

Material is the first filter in a grating specification. These are the four grades our mill materials actually cover — with weathering steel shown for what it is: a special grade we quote per project, not a stock line.

Material Corrosion behavior Typical environments Relative cost Documents
Carbon steel Q235B Needs a coating — shop primer, paint or hot-dip zinc Dry indoor platforms, shop floors, stair stringers, railed-off walkways The baseline of the four MTC EN 10204 3.1 per heat
Hot-dip galvanized Q235B Zinc coating shields the steel — corrosion-resistant outdoors Outdoor walkways, trench covers, guardrails, plant perimeters Carbon steel plus a galvanizing step MTC + coating checks to ASTM A123 / ISO 1461
Stainless SS304 Corrosion-resistant with no coating at all Food plants, washdown areas, general chemical duty Higher than coated carbon steel MTC EN 10204 3.1
Stainless SS316 Strongest of the four against chlorides and brine Coastal and marine platforms, chemical drainage, saline washdown The highest of the four MTC EN 10204 3.1
Weathering steel (corten)Quoted per project Grows a self-protecting patina in wet–dry cycles — not for constant wetness Facade screens, landscaping, architectural features, with runoff detailing Special grade — sourced and priced per project Material certification scoped with your quote

Weathering steel is not a Dengtai stock line. It is quoted per project with material certification; our stock mill materials are Q235B, SS304 and SS316. Tell us your weathering-grade requirement and we will quote it per project — no stock claims, no corten production program.

What corten actually is

Weathering Steel: Where the Patina Logic Works — and Where It Does Not

Corten grating searches usually mean one of two things: an architectural feature in bare weathering steel, or a grating that simply will not rust through. Those are different products, and only one of them is really corten.

A steel that rusts on purpose

Corten is the familiar trade name for weathering steel: carbon steel alloyed with copper, chromium and nickel so that its surface oxide becomes a dense, adherent patina instead of flaking rust. Cycled through wet and dry weather, that layer slows further attack — which is why it is often specified bare, for its warm brown finish rather than any coating.

Where the patina logic works

Freely exposed, ventilated surfaces that dry between rains: facade screens, cladding panels, landscaping edges and architectural features. Detailing must let water leave quickly and keep the steel breathing — the patina stabilizes only when the surface cycles, and open-mesh grating is one of the better formats for that.

Where it does not work

Where steel stays wet — buried edges, submerged or constantly washed lines — the patina never stabilizes. And rainwater running off weathering steel carries rust streaks that stain concrete and light surfaces below. Trench and floor grating is exactly that duty, so corten there needs deliberate drainage and runoff detailing — or a switch to hot-dip galvanized or stainless.

Why ask here

Why Buyers Ask Dengtai About Corten Grating

Corten grating, made to spec

Any size and any grade option — panels cut and banded to your drawings, from small MOQ. Weathering grades such as ASTM A588 or EN 10025-5 S355J0W are quoted per project with the material certification scoped before you commit; our stock lines run Q235B, SS304 and SS316.

Rust-resistant — with honest limits

Weathering steel is rust-resistant by chemistry: its patina protects instead of flaking, with no paint and no zinc. Where that logic does not fit — wet trenches, buried edges, washdown floors — say so in your RFQ and we will spec hot-dip galvanized Q235B or SS316 instead, the proven answers for those sites.

Mill cert with every shipment

Whatever grade ships, it ships proven: mill test certificates (EN 10204 Type 3.1) with every shipment, traceable heat by heat and ready to preview with your quote. For per-project weathering steel, the certificate for the sourced material is part of the offer — a material fact, not a material claim.

Applications

Where Weathering Steel Grating Is Specified

Bare steel with a designed finish — corten grating earns its place where the patina can cycle, the runoff is planned, and the look matters as much as the load.

Facade & architectural screens

Open-mesh screens and sun shading where the oxide patina is the finish — freely exposed, ventilated, drying between rains.

Landscaping & exterior features

Tree grates, edging and feature panels in the warm rust tone — detail drainage so streaks never reach adjacent paving.

Feature flooring, with care

Entrance areas and feature decks are possible — drip edges, sealed adjacent surfaces and planned runoff paths belong in the drawing set.

Wet duty — specify the alternative

For trench, drainage and washdown floors we recommend hot-dip galvanized Q235B or SS304 / SS316 — honest engineering beats a patina that never forms.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you keep corten grating in stock?

No — and we say so plainly. Weathering steel is not a Dengtai stock line and we run no corten production program. Corten grating is quoted per project with material certification; our stock mill materials are Q235B, SS304 and SS316. Tell us your weathering-grade requirement and we will quote it per project.

Where does the weathering steel patina work — and where does it not?

The patina logic works where panels cycle wet and dry in free air: facade screens, cladding, landscaping and architectural features. It does not work where steel stays wet or buried, and rainwater runoff carries rust streaks that stain concrete and adjacent surfaces — so trench and floor grating in weathering steel needs careful drainage detailing, or a switch to hot-dip galvanized or stainless.

How do I request corten grating from Dengtai?

Send the weathering grade you need, panel sizes and quantities through the quote form below. You receive an itemized quote within 24 hours; on our standard lines samples ship in 5–7 working days and production runs 15–25 working days after drawing confirmation. Whatever the grade, you receive mill test certificates (EN 10204 Type 3.1) with every shipment.
