Cover sizing basics
Three Decisions Size Every Trench Cover: Span, Load, Retention
A trench drain cover is specified before it is priced. The span is set by the trench itself — the panel bridges the clear width and bears on each edge. The load is set by what crosses the run — feet, trolleys or wheels. The retention is set by the zone — bolted down against traffic and theft, or lift-out for maintenance. Get those three right and the trench drain grating panel specifies itself.
| What crosses the trench | Class ref. | Typical cover from our range |
|---|---|---|
| Foot traffic — precincts, door rows, gardens | A15 | Light welded or press-locked panels, bars from 20×3 mm; close mesh to 11/11 mm where heels cross |
| Trolleys and light vehicles — kerbsides, driveways | B125 | 25×3 to 30×3 mm bars at 30/40 mm centers, banded ends |
| Cars and delivery vans — carriageways, yards | C250 | 30×5 to 40×5 mm bars at 30/40 mm centers |
| Trucks, forklifts — loading docks, aprons | D400 | 50×5 to 100×8 mm bars at 30/40 mm centers |
Class names referenced to EN 124 as a selection guide only. Covers are produced to the class you specify, and the confirmed class is stated in your quote — reports on request.
Not sure which class your lane needs? Send the trench widths and the traffic — we will spec the cover inside the 24-hour quote.
Cover construction
How a Trench Drain Grate Panel Is Built
Every trench drain grate we ship is a grating panel first — bearing bars spanning the trench, locked to cross bars, then finished for its zone. Three construction details separate a cover that seats and lasts from a panel that rattles loose.
1 · Banded edges
A band bar is welded across each panel end, closing off every bearing bar. Edges seat true on the trench lip, nothing snags a shoe or a pallet truck at the crossing, and the panel pours cleanly against concrete. Banding is standard on trench covers from us, not an upcharge.
2 · Open mesh or close mesh
Standard bar centers at 30/40/60 mm let storm water and debris fall straight through — the cover stays clear in heavy rain. Where the run doubles as a walkway, press-locked close mesh down to 11/11 mm keeps openings too small for a shoe heel, so people cross the line instead of stepping over it.
3 · Bolt-down or lift-out
Bolt-down covers take countersunk fixings so wheels pass flat over them — for vehicle zones and unattended streets. Lift-out panels take hook points, so maintenance crews clear the channel without tools. Tell us how the run will be serviced and we drill the pattern to your drawings.
Close-mesh panels come off our own press-lock line; covers and banding are finished in the same workshop. Ask for both options on one quote — itemized, never a vague lump.
Why factory-direct covers
Why Buyers Order Trench Drain Covers Straight from the Mill
High flow under heavy wheels
Open mesh admits storm water fast while one-piece welded construction carries truck wheels — the same trench drain grating panel is both the inlet and the traffic surface, with no separate grate to deflect.
Any length, no trader markup
Panels are cut and banded to your run — up to 6 m long, any length below that — priced factory-direct and itemized, FOB Tianjin as standard, EXW or CIF negotiable. Wholesale runs and small trial orders are both welcome.
Mill cert with every batch
Every heat is verified at goods-in on our five-stage QC plan, and a mill test certificate to EN 10204 Type 3.1 ships with the order. Certified & tested, reports on request — documents, not a certificate wall.
Applications
Where Trench Drain Covers Work
Anywhere a channel crosses traffic, the cover is the engineering: it has to let the water in, carry whatever rides over it, and stay where it was put.
Pedestrian crossings
Heel-proof close-mesh covers where foot routes cross the run — walked over, not stepped around.
Door rows and aprons
Banded covers along loading doors, where rain, trolleys and pallet trucks share the same line.
Yards and loading docks
Heavy bolted covers for forklift and truck routes — thick bars, close centers, countersunk fixings.
Roadway shoulders and kerbs
Linear cover runs classed for traffic, replacing a row of scattered gullies with one capture line.

FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I size trench drain covers for my trench?
Measure the clear width of the channel first — the cover spans that opening and bears on each edge, so panel width follows the trench, never a stock chart. Then match the load to what crosses the run: foot traffic, trolleys or vehicles. We confirm bar size, spacing and retention from your widths and traffic, referenced to EN 124 classes A15 to D400, inside the 24-hour quote.
Should trench covers be bolted down or lift-out?
Bolt them down where wheels cross or the run sits unattended in public — countersunk fixings stop rattle, creep and theft. Choose lift-out panels with hook access where crews clear the channel regularly, so maintenance needs no tools on site. Both drilling patterns are made to your drawings on the same panels.
What is the lead time for trench drain covers?
Samples ship in 5–7 working days and mass production runs 15–25 working days after drawing confirmation, hot-dip galvanizing included. Rush production in 10–15 days is possible with a surcharge — ask in your quote.
