Spec tables

Steel Trench Grating Spans by Trench Width, Bars by Load Class

Specifying steel trench grating is a two-step read: the trench sets the span, the traffic above it sets the bar section. Bearing bars run across the trench and seat on its shoulders; the panel length runs along it. Read the two tables together, then have the section confirmed in your quote — the numbers below are our real production range, not a generic catalog.

Table 1 · Trench width sets the span

Nominal trench widthHow the grating spans itPanel length handling
100 mmBearing bars span the narrow clear width in one stripRun cut from panels up to 6 m long, joints on banded ends
150 mmSame single strip; bar section steps up as the clear span growsPanel lengths cut to your run layout
200–300 mmThe common civil widths; 30 / 40 / 60 mm centers keep the inlet openOne strip covers the trench; no transverse joints mid-run
400–500 mmBar section steps up from 30×5 mm as span and class demandBanded ends carry the joint between panels
Over 500 mmSections up to 100×8 mm available; mid supports or frames where the span outruns the sectionEdge frames quoted as line items

Bearing bars run across the trench; panels are up to 1.25 m wide, so every common trench width is one strip wide.

Table 2 · Load class sets the bar section

D400400 kNTruck lanes, loading docks, aprons50×5 to 100×8 mm bars at 30/40 mm centers

Class names referenced to EN 124 as a selection guide only; panels are produced to the class you specify, with test reports on request.

Edges and finish

Banded Edges Standard, Hot-Dip Galvanized After Fabrication

A trench panel lives at floor level, in water, under wheels — so the edge and the finish are not options here. Every steel trench grating panel leaves the workshop with closed bar ends and a galvanized skin over every cut and weld.

bearing bars span across the trench banded edges close every bar end panel length runs along the trench

Banded edges as standard

A banding bar closes every cut bar end, gives the panel a straight seating edge on the trench shoulder, and makes panel joints land true along the run. Banding is quoted in, not added on. Banding types explained →

Hot-dip galvanized after fabrication

Panels go to the kettle after cutting, welding and banding, so the zinc covers every cut end and weld point to ASTM A123 / ISO 1461. Galvanizing runs 2–3 days at our certified partner — already inside the 15–25 day production window.

Q235B steel, or SS trench drain grades

Galvanized Q235B is the default trench grating. Where the run sees washdown, food, chemical or chloride duty, the same bar range comes in SS304 or SS316 — one drawing review covers both. Stainless drain grating →

Why specify ours

Why Buyers Specify Our Steel Trench Grating

Made to spec, any run length

Panels up to 6 m long, cut and banded to your run — no filler sizes, no on-site cutting. Send the layout and the free drawing review comes back inside the 24-hour quote.

High flow that takes truck wheels

Open mesh at 30 / 40 / 60 mm centers passes storm water fast, while the class-selected bar section carries the wheels above — from precinct foot traffic to loading docks. Close mesh to 11/11 mm where heels share the surface.

Batch tested, mill cert with every heat

Certified & tested, reports on request — trench grating is batch tested on our five-stage QC plan and every heat ships with its mill test certificate to EN 10204 Type 3.1.

Applications

Where Steel Trench Grating Works

Any linear drainage run where water arrives along a line and wheels or feet pass over it — the bar section simply follows the class of the traffic above.

Kerb lines & road shoulders

Linear edge collection classed for truck wheels — one run replacing a row of gullies.

Forecourts & loading aprons

D400-grade panels over wide trenches at doors, docks and wash pads.

Plant floors & washdown bays

SS trench drain grades where hoses, chemicals or chlorides rule out plain steel.

Precincts & door thresholds

Close-mesh strips people walk straight over, draining rain at every entrance.

Locking, lifting & documents

A trench run has to stay put under traffic and still open for cleaning. Fixings and lifting gear are sourced companion items supplied alongside our panels — honestly framed as such, quoted as line items, shipped with the order:

  • Grating clips and saddle clamps — bolt-down fixing, no drilling of the panel
  • Locking plates and security bolts where panels must not lift casually
  • Lifting keys and lifting anchors for maintenance access along the run
  • MTC EN 10204 Type 3.1, DoC per destination and factory inspection report with every shipment

Standards & compliance

Produced to Recognized Standards — Documents on Request

EN 124 class reference

Load classes A15 to D400 referenced to EN 124 as the selection language for trench and gully covers. Panels are produced to the class you specify and stated in your quote.

ASTM A123 / ISO 1461 HDG

Galvanized coating thickness checked by sampling on every galvanized batch before panels are released — one of the five stages in our QC plan.

MBG 531 weld practice

Welded trench panels produced to ANSI/NAAMM MBG 531 reference practice. Certified & tested, reports on request — documents you can verify, not a certificate wall.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What trench widths can steel trench grating span?

Bearing bars span the clear internal width of the trench and seat on the trench shoulders. Panels run up to 1.25 m wide and 6 m long, so most trench widths are covered by one strip with the joints landing on the banded panel ends. Send the internal width and the traffic above it — the bar section is confirmed in your 24-hour quote.

Do trench grating panels come banded and galvanized?

Yes. Banded edges are standard on every trench panel, and panels are hot-dip galvanized to ASTM A123 / ISO 1461 after fabrication — galvanizing is already counted inside the 5–7 working day sample window and the 15–25 working day production window. SS304 or SS316 is available for washdown and chloride duty.

How are the panels locked down and lifted for cleaning?

Panels are fixed with grating clips or bolt-down locking plates, and lifting keys or lifting anchors make the run openable for maintenance. These fixings are sourced companion items supplied alongside our panels — quoted as line items and shipped with your order.
