Catwalk fundamentals

Span vs Support Steel — and the Feel Underfoot

Whether your team says catwalk grating or grating catwalk, every elevated walk comes down to one trade: steel in the support frame, or steel in the panel. Here is how the two routes compare — qualitatively, the way it feels on shift, not just on paper.

Design factor Frequent support steel Long clear spans
Support philosophyMore beams under the walk — each panel lands on steel at short intervalsFewer beams — the panel itself bridges the gap between supports
Bearing barLighter flat bars, from the 20×3 mm end of our rangeHeavier sections toward 100×8 mm as spans and loads grow
Bar spacing60 mm centers carry foot traffic comfortably30 / 40 mm centers stiffen the deck under tool bags and carts
Feel underfootA firm, quiet step — the panel reads as part of the structureHeavier bars keep long panels from feeling live; specify the feel you want
Where the steel sitsLess steel per panel, more in the support frameMore steel per panel, saved on the support frame
Typical useDense plant retrofits, pipework corridorsCross-plant runs over conveyors, tanks and process lines

Not sure which route your layout allows? Send your drawings — we will spec it inside the 24-hour quote.

Anatomy of a catwalk

Bearing Direction, Serration and the Guardrail Companion

foot traffic support steel bearing bars span the supports

1 · Bearing bars carry the load

Feet land on bearing bars, bearing bars land on support steel — so panel orientation matters before anything else. Cross bars hold the bearing bars in plane; they do not carry the span. Our electro-forging line welds every intersection into one panel; press-locked catwalk panels cover close-mesh duties.

plain surface serrated teeth same bar section — only the top edge changes

2 · Serrated option for oily plants

Serration is a geometry choice, not a coating: the teeth stand proud of the bar so a boot sole meets edges instead of a flat face. Specify it for wet or oily process areas; keep plain surfaces for dry indoor routes. See the serrated grating mechanics page for how the tooth profile works.

3 · The guardrail companion

A catwalk is a system, not a panel: floor panels, posts and rails, a toe plate to stop dropped tools, and infill panels that match the floor spec. Guardrail companions, toe plates and fixing clips are sourced companion items we supply alongside our panels to one set of drawings.

Why specify catwalk panels

Why Plants Order Steel Catwalk Grating Panels

Any span, any load

Serrated or plain surfaces, custom spacing and spans — tell us your load and layout. Bearing bars run from 20×3 mm to 100×8 mm, so the panel follows your support steel instead of fighting it.

Grip-safe underfoot, open above the mess

Serrated bearing bars give wet-area catwalk grating a toothed, edge-first walking surface; open mesh lets spills, dust and ice fall through instead of pooling where people walk.

Custom catwalk grating sizes

Made to spec, cut and banded to your drawings — every panel lands on your support steel without site cutting. Drawing review is free and folded into the 24-hour quote.

Applications

Where Catwalk Grating Carries Daily Traffic

A catwalk grating walkway earns its keep wherever people must move through a plant at height, day after day — around equipment, over process lines, between buildings.

Plant maintenance access

Elevated walks between process units — valves, gauges and drives reachable without scaffolding.

Conveyor & pipe racks

Long clear-span runs on fewer support beams — heavier bearing bars do the bridging.

Wet & oily process areas

Serrated surfaces and open mesh for washdown zones — the wet-area catwalk grating spec.

Tank-top & roof access

Galvanized catwalk grating for outdoor duty, tied into guardrails and stair flights as one package.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the lead time for catwalk grating?

Samples ship in 5–7 working days and mass production runs 15–25 working days after drawing confirmation, both including hot-dip galvanizing. Rush production in 10–15 days is possible with a surcharge — ask in your quote.

Do you accept small trial orders?

Yes — small trial orders are welcome. Full-container orders are calculated per loading plan, so you only pay for the steel you ship.

How is catwalk grating shipped and priced?

Shipped worldwide from Tianjin Port — FOB Tianjin as standard, EXW or CIF negotiable. Pricing is itemized per m² or per ton in your quote; we do not publish a fixed price list.
