Every steel catwalk material we ship starts as the same welded bar grating panel — the same bearing bars, the same mesh, the same banded edges. What separates the three routes below is not strength but corrosion strategy: zinc over carbon steel, or an alloy that protects itself. Pick the route by reading the environment the catwalk lives in.

Stainless route

Stainless Steel Catwalk: When the Environment Picks the Material

A stainless steel catwalk answers a different question than a galvanized one. The loads are identical, the panel geometry is identical — buyers move to stainless because hosing, chemicals or salt attack the route faster than zinc can hold. If your catwalk is simply outdoors and wet, galvanized catwalk grating in Q235B remains the sensible default from the table above. If the route gets washed, hosed or salted every week, read on.

SS304 — the washdown grade

The chromium-nickel workhorse for food, beverage and pharmaceutical plants where catwalks are hosed and cleaned with chemicals. No coating to damage, no repaint cycle — open mesh drains the wash water straight through. Serrated or plain bars, same as the galvanized line.

SS316 — marine & chemical duty

Adds molybdenum for the chloride-heavy places: dockside and offshore access, brine and chemical handling areas, coastal plant where salt spray lands on every surface. The premium stainless steel catwalk route — and the one that outlasts zinc where the air itself is corrosive.

What stays the same

Bearing bars from 20×3 mm to 100×8 mm, spacing at 30 / 40 / 60 mm centers, panels up to 1.25 m wide and 6 m long, banded edges, and a mill test certificate to EN 10204 Type 3.1 per heat — the same press and weld routes, just without the zinc dip.

Walk the route and note what attacks it: rain only, daily hose-downs with cleaning chemicals, or salt spray and chlorides. The environment — not the load — picks the steel catwalk material. Loads are handled in pass two.

What material should a catwalk be made of?

For most plant catwalks, Q235B carbon steel hot-dip galvanized to ASTM A123 / ISO 1461 is the default — the zinc handles rain and splash and the cost stays reasonable. Move to an SS304 stainless steel catwalk where hoses and cleaning chemicals run daily, and to SS316 near salt water or strong chlorides. The panel geometry stays the same across all three grades.

What is the lead time for steel catwalk material?

Samples ship in 5–7 working days and mass production runs 15–25 working days after drawing confirmation. Galvanized panels include the hot-dip step inside that window; stainless panels skip it. Rush production in 10–15 days is possible with a surcharge — ask in your quote.
