The one decision
Serrated or Plain: Choosing the Top for Your Zones
Same bars, same mesh, same load — the only difference is the top edge of the bearing bar. That one choice decides how the panel behaves under a wet boot, a trolley wheel and a washdown hose. Here is the honest comparison, including where plain is the better call.
| Dimension | Serrated top | Plain top |
|---|---|---|
| Top geometry | A row of teeth formed along the top of every bearing bar | Smooth flat bar surface, no crevices |
| Under wet or oily soles | Tooth crests press through the film and engage the boot tread | The sole rides on a flat film with nothing to bite into |
| Mud, snow, soft debris | Squeeze into the tooth valleys; crest contact is preserved | Spread into a smooth layer between sole and steel |
| Wheeled traffic | Small wheels judder over the teeth | Smooth roll — the usual choice for trolley and cart routes |
| Cleaning | Needs brushing to clear the tooth valleys | Sweeps and hoses down fastest |
| Typical zones | Wet bays, oily plants, frost and ice, ramps, stairs | Dry interiors, clean rooms, cart aisles |

Serration fundamentals
How Serration Works, Described as Geometry
No coatings, no chemistry — serration is shaped steel. Three things happen when a tooth row meets a boot, and all three can be drawn on a napkin.
1 · The tooth row
Before the panel is welded, the top edge of each bearing bar is formed into a repeating row of teeth. Every bar in the panel carries the same row, so the working edge repeats across the full walking width — there is no smooth lane left to step into.
2 · Biting through the film
On a flat top, a film of water or oil sits between steel and sole and the two shear apart. Tooth crests press through that film and meet the tread pattern of the boot — a mechanical interlock, not a finish that wears away.
3 · Where the mud goes
Soft packing — mud, snow, sludge — squeezes into the tooth valleys instead of building a smooth layer on top. Contact stays steel-to-sole at the crests, and the open mesh underfoot drains what the valleys cannot hold.
The same geometry tells you when not to order it: on dry, swept floors and trolley routes the smooth top of plain grating rides quieter and hoses down faster — check it before you over-specify teeth.
Why order serrated
Why Buyers Order Serrated Steel Grating From the Mill
Factory-direct, worldwide

Made to order, to your drawing
Any panel in the range leaves with a serrated or plain top — including 19W4 type serrated panels — cut and banded to your drawings, with free drawing review inside the quote.
Samples first, small MOQ after
Order a serrated sample and walk on it in your own wet zone before committing. Small trial orders are welcome, and a factory quote lands within 24 hours.
Where to spec it
Serrated Grating for Wet Zones — and Three More Places Teeth Earn Their Keep
Serration is the anti-slip workhorse of our safety grating family, and the anchor the other serrated pages hang from. The rule of thumb: if the floor is wet, oily or icy for part of its life, order the teeth. Four zones account for most serrated enquiries:
Wet zones
Wash bays, dock edges, cooling towers, outdoor platforms — water films that never fully dry.
Oily plants
Machining halls, press shops and lube stores where coolant mist and oil reach the floor.
Frost and ice
Exterior stairs, ramps and platforms in snow country — the "icy floors" behind most serrated orders.
Ramps and stair treads
Slopes shorten every footfall; serrated treads and stair nosings order in the same quote.

Serration meets material and finish
The tooth row is geometry, so it survives every finish route. Zinc over teeth simply adds a metallurgical coat — the crests stay crests, checked by coating-thickness sampling before release. Stainless keeps the same tooth form for washdown and marine zones:
- Q235B serrated, black or hot-dip galvanized to ASTM A123 / ISO 1461
- SS304 / SS316 serrated tops for food, chemical and marine exposure
- Mill test certificate to EN 10204 Type 3.1 with every order
- Factory inspection report, DoC prepared per order destination
Standards & compliance
What We Document — and What We Do Not Claim
ANSI / NAAMM MBG 531
Serrated welded panels produced to MBG 531 reference practice, with weld inspection on our five-stage QC plan.
ASTM A123 / ISO 1461 HDG
Galvanized coating thickness sampled on every galvanized serrated batch — the zinc follows the teeth, and we check it did.
CE & SGS tested
Certified & tested, reports on request — documents you can verify, not a certificate wall.
On anti-slip, stated plainly: we make no slip-test, coefficient or anti-slip certification claims — slip behavior depends on your contaminant, your footwear and your site. What we form, inspect and ship is geometry: teeth on every bar, on the pitch you ordered, in the material and finish you chose. Standards hub — market-by-market comparison →

FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
How does serrated grating work?
Each bearing bar carries a row of teeth along its top edge. Under a wet or oily boot, the tooth crests press through the film and engage the tread pattern of the sole, while mud and snow squeeze into the valleys instead of forming a smooth layer. It is a mechanical interlock described by geometry — not a coating that wears off.
Serrated or plain grating — which should I order?
Specify serrated tops for wet zones, oily plants, frost and ice, ramps and stairs. Specify plain tops for dry clean interiors, trolley and cart routes, and washdown areas where a smooth surface sweeps and hoses down fastest. Mixed orders are fine — mark the zones on your drawing and we quote both.
Can I get serrated grating samples first?
Yes. Serrated samples ship in 5–7 working days and mass production runs 15–25 working days after drawing confirmation, both including hot-dip galvanizing. Small trial orders are welcome, and a quote with free drawing review lands within 24 hours.
