Process comparison

Swage-Locked vs Press-Locked vs Forge-Welded

The forming process decides mesh density, flatness and how the panel behaves underfoot. Here is how the three mechanical grating processes compare — with an honest note on which lines run in our own workshop.

Dimension Swage-Locked Press-Locked Forge-Welded
Forming principleCross bars swaged — deformed — through pre-punched holes in bearing barsCross bars mechanically pressed into notched bearing bars — no weldingEvery bearing-bar / cross-bar intersection resistance-forged under pressure
Load behaviorHigh transverse stiffness; holds fine bars firmlyVery uniform load distribution; suited to pedestrian trafficHigh load capacity at wide spans; joints cannot work loose
Mesh rangeDense patterns; depends on bar selectionDown to 11 / 11 mm close mesh30 / 40 / 60 mm centers
Panel flatnessFlat; depends on bar tolerancesExtremely flat — no weld heat, no distortionFlat panels straight off the line

How panels are made

The Swage-Lock Process, Step by Step

bearing bars pre-punched holes holes set the mesh pattern

1 · Punching the bearing bars

Flat bearing bars are punched with a regular row of holes. The hole pitch is what sets the pattern — dense or open — before any assembly begins.

swaging pressure bearing bar cross bar ends deformed to lock the joint

2 · Swaging the cross bars

Cross bars are pushed through the holes, then swaged — deformed under pressure — so each end flares and the joint locks mechanically, with no welding heat in the panel.

3 · Finishing & inspection

Panels for outdoor duty go to a certified galvanizing partner near our mill for ASTM A123 / ISO 1461 hot-dip galvanizing — typically 2–3 days, already counted inside your production window.

Our lines, honestly

Our in-house forming lines are electro-forging and press-locking — we do not run a standing swage-locked production line. Swage-locked enquiries are assessed per project on our press line: we take them on when the pattern suits the tooling, and we say so plainly when press-locked or electro-forged panels serve the duty better. Send your drawing and the 24-hour quote comes back with the honest recommendation.

Why specify swaged

Why Specifiers Ask for Swage Locked Bar Grating

Dense patterns, flat top

Because the hole pitch sets the mesh, swaged grating keeps dense, even patterns with fine bars held firmly — and a flat walking surface with no weld beads across it.

Stiff across the panel

The mechanical lock gives swage locked grating high transverse stiffness — the panel resists sideways racking, which is why the process is specified for flooring and screens where flatness matters.

Custom patterns to your drawings

Custom swage locked bar grating is quoted to your bar heights, hole pattern and panel sizes — with free drawing review inside the 24-hour quote.

Applications

Where Swage-Locked Panels Are Specified

Dense patterns, even transparency and a flat surface — swaged steel grating is chosen wherever the mesh itself is part of the design intent.

Architectural facades & screens

Dense swaged patterns used as facade ventilation and screening panels with even transparency.

Fine-mesh flooring

Close patterns keep openings small — the geometry specifiers choose for pedestrian comfort on interior floors.

Sunshade & ventilation panels

Flat swaged panels as louvre-style screens where airflow and shading must stay even across the panel.

Stair & barrier infill

Dense-pattern infill panels for stairs, balustrades and guardrails where a fine, flat mesh is wanted.

Materials & test documents

Every heat of Q235B, SS304 or SS316 enters production with its mill test certificate verified at goods-in — the first of our five QC stages. Panels leave with documentation, not promises:

  • Mill test certificate to EN 10204 Type 3.1
  • Factory inspection report with every shipment
  • Declaration of Conformity prepared per order destination

Standards & compliance

Produced to Recognized Standards — Documents on Request

ANSI / NAAMM MBG 531

Panels produced to MBG 531 reference practice; swage-locked enquiries are reviewed against it in the per-project assessment.

ASTM A123 / ISO 1461 HDG

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you make swage-locked grating in your own factory?

Not as a standing line. Our in-house forming lines are electro-forging and press-locking; swage-locked enquiries are assessed per project on our press line. If press-locked or electro-forged panels serve your duty better, the quote says so plainly.

What is swage-locked bar grating?

A mechanically locked grating: holes are punched in the bearing bars, cross bars are pushed through, and each cross bar is swaged — deformed under pressure — so the joint locks without welding. The result is a dense, flat pattern with high transverse stiffness.

Can I get samples, and how is shipping handled?

Yes — samples ship in 5–7 working days and confirmed orders run 15–25 working days after drawing confirmation, hot-dip galvanizing included. Panels ship worldwide from Tianjin Port, FOB Tianjin as standard, EXW or CIF negotiable.
