One Mesh, Two Tops: 19W4 Serrated vs 19W4 Plain

19W4 serrated grating is a combination specification, not a separate product. The 19W4 mesh stays exactly as the designation reads — bearing bars on 19/16 in (about 30 mm) centers, W for welded, cross bars on 4 in (about 100 mm) — and the top of every bearing bar carries sheared teeth instead of a smooth edge. Here is where that combination earns its place.

How the serration works

Serration Mechanics, Described as Geometry

teeth along the top edge of one bearing bar

1 · Teeth on every bearing bar

Serration is a cutting step, not a coating: the top edge of each flat bar is sheared into a repeated tooth profile before the panel is welded. Every bar that crosses the walking direction therefore carries the same row of small ramps.

footwear tread liquid drains through — teeth meet the sole, not the film

2 · How the teeth meet a sole

On a wet or oily floor, a thin liquid film can separate a smooth bar from footwear. Tooth edges run at an angle to the sole, so the tread pattern catches on them in series along the walking direction while the open mesh lets the liquid fall away.

bearing bars at ≈30 mm centers · cross bars every 4 in

3 · Why the 19W4 pitch suits it

At about 30 mm bar centers, each footfall crosses several toothed bars in the walking direction, and the mesh stays open enough to shed water, oil and debris. That balance is why the 19W4 pattern with serrated tops is the default industrial outdoor spec.

The honest alternative: on dry, clean or washdown floors the smooth top of plain grating sweeps and hoses down faster, with no crevices to hold soil — check it before you over-specify teeth.

Why specify 19W4 serrated

Why Buyers Specify 19W4 Serrated Grating From the Mill

From the mill, no middlemen

19W4 serrated panels leave our own workshop — quotes and engineering answers come from the people who run the weld line. Factory-direct pricing, FOB Tianjin, itemized quote on request.

Custom serrated sizes, small MOQ

The stock 19W4 pattern or fully custom pitches, panel sizes and notches — cut and banded to your drawings with the surface you mark. Small trial orders are welcome; drawing review is free.

Serrated or plain, with papers

Both surfaces come from one panel range with one paper trail: certified & tested, reports on request, mill test certificate to EN 10204 Type 3.1 with every order.

Applications

Where the 19W4 Serrated Combo Is the Default

Whenever the walking surface stays wet, oily or weather-exposed, buyers stop asking "serrated or plain?" and start asking "which pitch?" — the teeth are assumed. These are the zones where that assumption is standard practice.

Outdoor platforms & walkways

Rain, frost and morning dew sit on every outdoor steel floor — the serrated 19W4 pattern is the conventional default for plant exteriors.

Oily plants & wash bays

Machining lines, food washdown and grease pits: open mesh drains the film downward so the teeth meet the sole, not a puddle.

Ramps, stairs & escape routes

Slopes and treads ask the most of footwear grip; serrated tops with nosing on treads are the usual pairing on industrial stairs.

Wet utility & sump decks

Water-treatment galleries, pump rooms and drainage walkways stand over standing water — toothed bars and free-draining mesh carry the duty.

Materials & test documents

Every heat of Q235B, SS304 or SS316 enters production with its mill test certificate verified at goods-in — the first of our five QC stages. Panels leave with documentation, not promises:

  • Mill test certificate to EN 10204 Type 3.1
  • Factory inspection report with every shipment
  • Declaration of Conformity prepared per order destination

Standards & compliance

What We Can Document — and What We Will Not Claim

ANSI / NAAMM MBG 531

Serrated welded panels produced to MBG 531 reference practice, with joint inspection on our five-stage QC plan.

ASTM A123 / ISO 1461 HDG

Galvanized serrated bar grating gets coating-thickness checks by sampling on every galvanized batch before release.

CE & SGS tested

Certified & tested, reports on request — material, weld and coating documents you can verify, not a certificate wall.

On anti-slip, stated plainly: slip behavior depends on your contaminant, your footwear and your site, so we make no slip-test or anti-slip certification claims. What we specify and check is the geometry — teeth on every bar, at the 19W4 pitch — and the paper trail behind the steel. Standards hub — market-by-market comparison →

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What does 19W4 mean on a serrated grating?

19W4 is a stock bar-grating designation: bearing bars on 19/16 in (about 30 mm) centers, W for welded construction, and cross bars on 4 in (about 100 mm) centers. The serrated version keeps that exact mesh and swaps the smooth top of each bearing bar for sheared teeth.

When should I choose serrated instead of plain tops?

Choose serrated where the walking surface runs wet, oily or weather-exposed — outdoor platforms, wash bays, oily plants, ramps and stairs. Choose plain tops on dry, clean or hygiene floors, where the smooth surface sweeps and hoses down faster. We supply both from the same 19W4 panel range.

Do you slip-test your serrated grating?

No — we make no slip-test claims. We specify geometry instead: teeth sheared along the top of every bearing bar, on 30 mm centers, with open mesh that drains water and oil away from the sole. Conditions differ site by site, so evaluate the surface in your own conditions; samples ship in 5–7 working days.
