Material comparison
Steel Grating Material Comparison
Most grating floors come down to a choice between four materials. Here is the honest comparison — with the hot-dip galvanized row this page is about highlighted, and each material linked to its own page.
| Dimension | Black Carbon Steel Q235B | Hot-Dip Galvanized | SS304 | SS316 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Corrosion resistance | Needs paint or oil from day one | Zinc bonds over every bar and weld — rust-resistant outdoors | Corrosion-resistant in most service environments | Specified for chloride and marine exposure |
| Typical environment | Indoor, dry, painted on site | Outdoor platforms, walkways, trench covers | Food plants, washdown areas, general industry | Seawater, chemical plants, coastal works |
| Relative cost | Lowest | Moderate — the outdoor default | Higher | Highest |
| Maintenance | Repainting cycles on site | Long service without recoating | Low | Lowest |
| Delivery from our mill | Black finish in 15–25 days | HDG included in 15–25 days | 15–25 days | 15–25 days |
| MTC documentation | EN 10204 3.1 per heat | EN 10204 3.1 per heat + coating checks | EN 10204 3.1 per heat | EN 10204 3.1 per heat |

How the panel is made
From Bare Bars to Galvanized Panels
1 · Welded panel construction
Bearing bars from 20×3 mm to 100×8 mm are assembled with cross bars at 30/40/60 mm centers, then every intersection is pressure-forged in one pass — the same solid construction as our welded steel grating line, built to be galvanized.
2 · Cut and banded to your sizes
Panels are cut to your drawings — any size from small MOQ trial orders up — and closed with banding bars, so floors arrive ready to bolt: up to 1.25 m wide and 6 m long, no site welding needed.
3 · Hot-dip galvanizing
Finished panels are immersed in molten zinc, coating every bar, weld and cut edge — inside and out. Coating thickness is checked by sampling to ASTM A123 / ISO 1461, typically a 2–3 day cycle already counted inside your production window.
Why specify galvanized
Why Galvanized Bar Grating Is the Outdoor Workhorse
Rust-resistant by default
The zinc layer is not paint — it is bonded to the steel and shields bars, welds and cut edges from weather. That is why galvanized bar grating, not painted steel, is the default choice for outdoor floors and wet sites.
Heavy duty at any span
Welded bearing bars from 20×3 mm up to 100×8 mm carry wheel and foot loads across wide spans. Serrated tops are available where mud, ice or oil make walking surfaces slippery.
Any size, small MOQ, certs in the box
Factory-direct with no middlemen: cut and banded to your drawings from small trial orders up, and every batch ships with traceable mill test certificates.
Applications
Where Galvanized Bar Grating Ships
Open mesh that sheds rain, snow and debris, plus a zinc finish that stands up to the weather — this galvanized metal grating is the panel most outdoor steel floors end up specifying.
Outdoor platforms & mezzanines
Load-rated flooring for plant platforms and access mezzanines that live outdoors year-round.
Walkways & catwalks
Elevated walkway grating that drains as it is walked on — no pooling, no ice sheets.
Trench & drainage covers
Site perimeters and process drains — open mesh lets water through while the zinc holds off the ground moisture.
Stair treads & guardrail infill
Galvanized treads with serrated or plain surfaces, plus matching infill panels for guardrails.

Materials & test documents
Every heat of Q235B enters production with its mill test certificate verified at goods-in — the first of our five QC stages. We ship mill test certificates (EN 10204 Type 3.1) with every shipment, and galvanized batches carry coating-thickness checks:
- Mill test certificate to EN 10204 Type 3.1, traceable to the heat
- Coating-thickness sampling report for every galvanized batch
- Factory inspection report and Declaration of Conformity per destination
Standards & compliance
Produced to Recognized Standards — Documents on Request
ANSI / NAAMM MBG 531
Welded bar grating produced to MBG 531 reference practice, with weld inspection on our five-stage QC plan.
ASTM A123 / ISO 1461 HDG
Galvanized coating thickness checked by sampling on every galvanized batch before panels are released.
CE & SGS tested
Certified & tested, reports on request — we show documents you can verify, not a certificate wall.

FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
What mill certificates come with galvanized bar grating?
We ship mill test certificates (EN 10204 Type 3.1) with every shipment, together with a factory inspection report and a Declaration of Conformity prepared per destination. Certified and tested — reports on request.
Galvanized Q235B or stainless steel — which do I need?
For outdoor platforms, walkways and trench covers, hot-dip galvanized Q235B bar grating is the standard workhorse: zinc protection at a lower relative cost. Stainless steel (SS304 or SS316) makes sense for washdown, chemical or marine exposure where coated steel would need repainting.
Does hot-dip galvanizing add lead time?
No — galvanizing runs at a certified partner plant near our mill on a 2–3 day cycle, already counted inside the standard window: samples in 5–7 working days and mass production in 15–25 working days after drawing confirmation.
