Duty class comparison

Light Duty vs Standard vs Heavy Duty

Duty class is a traffic decision before it is a steel decision. The comparison below shows what changes between classes inside our real bar range — and when the honest answer is to step up.

When light duty is the right spec

The floor carries people, not wheels: plant walkways, mezzanine access, utility platforms, sunken pit covers on foot routes. Specifying the 20×3 mm class here keeps panels light to lift, low in dead load on support steel, and open enough to shed water and debris — the right engineering, not just the lightest one.

When to step up — honestly

If a trolley becomes a pallet truck, or a maintenance route becomes a forklift route, the light bar section stops being economical at any price. Step up to heavy duty grating for wheel loads, or ask about 1 inch bar grating designations when you need a recognized mid-range section. Send the traffic picture — we will size it for you.

Not sure which class your floor needs? Send your drawings — we will spec it inside the 24-hour quote.

How a light duty panel is sized

Three Decisions Behind a Light Duty Panel

slender bars, 20×3 class cross bars spacing centers

1 · Bar section at the light end

Light duty starts with the smallest sections we run — the 20×3 mm class end of the 20×3 to 100×8 mm bearing-bar range. Plain surface for smooth trolleys, serrated where the route gets wet.

debris falls through the open mesh

2 · Spacing set by debris and heels

Where debris drops through, wider 60 mm centers cut weight and cost. On public or rooftop routes, tighten to 30 / 40 mm — or move to press-locked close mesh down to 11 / 11 mm for heel-proof flooring.

3 · Finish matched to exposure

Outdoor walkways get hot-dip galvanizing to ASTM A123 / ISO 1461 — coating thickness checked by sampling on every batch. Washdown and coastal zones move to SS304 / SS316 stainless light sections.

Why specify light duty

Why Buyers Specify Light Duty Grating From the Mill

Specs sized for foot traffic

Request light duty grating specs and you get the full picture — bar section, centers, span and finish for people-only routes. Duty class chosen from the traffic, not padded for the sake of steel weight.

Light to handle, fast to lay

Smaller sections mean lighter panels per m² — easier lifts into mezzanines and roof routes, less dead load on support steel, and quicker installation on site. A lightweight walkway grating spec your crews will notice.

Factory-direct, any quantity

Mill-made panels shipped FOB Tianjin — small trial lots or full containers, with light lots verified through the same five-stage QC as every other order. Help from factory engineers is free, within 24 hours.

Applications

Where Light Duty Grating Works

Open-mesh flooring for everywhere people walk and nothing heavier rolls — the light bar section carries the traffic without carrying steel you did not need.

Plant walkways & access routes

People-only walkways around process equipment, where open mesh keeps the route drained and visible.

Mezzanines & storage catwalks

Light flooring that trims dead load on mezzanine framing — and lifts into place without rigging gear.

Light traffic floors

Trolley and pedestrian floors in warehouses and plant rooms — serrated surface optional for wet areas.

Pit & trench covers on foot routes

Covers over utility trenches and inspection pits where only people pass — heel-proof mesh where heels will.

Materials & test documents

Every heat of Q235B, SS304 or SS316 enters production with its mill test certificate verified at goods-in — the first of our five QC stages. Light lots get the same paper trail as containers:

  • Mill test certificate to EN 10204 Type 3.1
  • Factory inspection report with every shipment
  • Declaration of Conformity prepared per order destination

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What makes grating light duty?

Duty class is set by the bearing bar section and the traffic the floor must carry. Light duty uses the small end of our bar range — 20×3 mm class sections — with spacing chosen for pedestrian routes and light traffic floors. If wheels or heavy point loads arrive, we will tell you to step up to heavier bars instead of selling you an under-spec panel.

Can light duty grating be galvanized or stainless?

Yes. Q235B carbon steel panels are hot-dip galvanized to ASTM A123 / ISO 1461 as standard for outdoor exposure, and SS304 or SS316 stainless is available for washdown and corrosive areas. Galvanizing is already counted inside the 5–7 day sample and 15–25 day production windows.

Do you accept small orders of light duty grating?

Yes — small trial orders are welcome, any quantity. Panels are cut and banded to your drawings, with an itemized FOB Tianjin quote within 24 hours and free drawing review included.
