Construction comparison

Open Mesh vs Close Mesh vs Solid Plate

Open steel flooring is a design decision, not just a product. Whether buyers call it open flooring, metal grill flooring or open mesh, the decision is the same: how much opening your application can tolerate. The table below is the specifier version of that decision — including the honest case where an open floor is the wrong answer and close mesh takes over.

Dimension Open Steel Flooring Close Mesh Solid Plate
Rain & spillsPass straight through — nothing pools on the walking surfacePasses through; fine solids are caught by the tighter gridPools and must be sloped or drained away
Snow & iceSheds through the grid; little build-up underfootSheds through, more slowlyCollects on top until cleared — slip risk
Ventilation & lightAir, heat and daylight move freely through the floorPartial airflow through narrow gapsNone — traps heat and fumes underneath
Steel per areaLeast steel of the three — the openings do part of the workMiddle — more bars, still lighter than plateMost — a full steel section per square metre
Small solidsFasteners and debris fall through — plan what is belowCatches most small solids while drainingNothing falls through
Underfoot gripSerrated bearing bars optional for wet or oily dutySerrated or plain; heel-proof for public trafficNeeds a raised pattern or coating for grip

The open-construction argument

What an Open Floor Does for a Plant

air + light cross bars bearing bars

1 · Ventilation and daylight

Openings between bearing bars let heat, fumes and steam rise through the floor instead of building up below it — and daylight reach the level underneath. On mezzanines and multi-level plants that is free ventilation.

spill on grid straight through

2 · Spill, rain and snow pass-through

Water, oil and washdown liquid fall through the grid to the drain or ground below. The walking surface stays dry and visible, and outdoors there is no ponding and far less ice to manage in winter.

open grid solid plate less steel per m²

3 · Weight versus solid plate

An open grid carries the same duty class with a fraction of the steel of a solid plate — less dead load on your structure, easier handling on site, and lower material use for the same covered area.

Why specify open

Why Specifiers Choose Open Steel Flooring

Anti-slip, all-weather footing

Serrated bearing bars give grip in rain, oil and washdown zones, and the open surface never holds a film of standing water. A drier step is a safer step.

Heavy duty without plate weight

Bearing bars from 20×3 mm up to 100×8 mm take wheel and point loads on an open grid — load tables on request, so you specify by span and duty, not by guesswork.

Factory-direct, custom to drawings

Applications

Where Open Steel Flooring Earns Its Keep

Anywhere water arrives, heat rises, or the level below needs light — an open floor solves three problems at once.

Platforms & mezzanines

Ventilated decking lets heat and fumes rise through instead of collecting under the walk level.

Outdoor walkways & catwalks

Rain and snow fall straight through — no ponding, far less ice, no drain channels to clean.

Wet & washdown process floors

Spills drain straight through to the trench below — the floor itself never becomes the problem.

Stair treads & landings

Open treads with serrated surfaces — snow and water drop off the leading edge instead of riding the stair.

The honest counterpoint

When Solids Must Not Fall Through

Open steel flooring is a poor choice for floors above occupied spaces, clean rooms, live equipment or anything that small parts could damage below. The fix is not a solid plate — it is a closer grid. Press-locked close mesh keeps the drain-through character while shrinking the openings until fasteners, debris and heels stay on top.

Keep open mesh when

  • Water, oil or washdown has to leave the walking surface fast
  • Heat, fumes or steam should rise through the floor
  • The floor sits outdoors over ground or an open pit
  • Structure weight and steel use matter to the design

Switch to close mesh when

  • People or live equipment sit below the floor level
  • Small parts, tools or product must stay on the surface
  • Public traffic in street shoes needs heel-proof openings
  • The floor is indoors, where most debris should not drop through

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What is open steel flooring?

Open steel flooring is a floor built from steel bearing bars and cross bars joined into a grid, with clear openings between them. Rain, spills, air and light pass straight through instead of pooling on the surface, and the open grid uses less steel than solid plate. Panels are welded or press-locked and usually hot-dip galvanized.

When should I specify close mesh instead of open flooring?

Choose close mesh when small solids must not fall through the floor, or where public traffic in street shoes needs heel-proof openings. Press-locked close mesh reaches 11/11 mm centers while keeping most of the drainage and ventilation of an open floor.

What is the lead time for open steel flooring?

Samples ship in 5–7 working days and mass production runs 15–25 working days after drawing confirmation, both including hot-dip galvanizing. Rush production in 10–15 days is possible with a surcharge — ask in your quote.
