Two identical open grid steel flooring panels behave completely differently depending on how the grid is laid relative to the traffic. This is the single most common planning error on plant floors — the table below is how we review it before we cut a single bar.

Bearing Bars Run in the Traffic Direction — Here Is Why
An open steel flooring panel is not symmetrical, even when it looks it. The bearing bars span the gap between support steel and carry the floor in bending. The cross bars only hold the bearing bars at their spacing and spread a point load into the neighboring bars.
Point the bearing bars in the direction people and pallet trucks actually travel, and every wheel crosses many bearing bars in a row. Turn the grid 90 degrees and the same wheel lands on cross bars that were never meant to carry it — you feel it as rocking edges, live panels and loose joints long before anything bends for good.
Before you order, walk the route: mark the traffic direction on your plan, lay the bearing bars parallel to it, then set the support steel to the span that movement needs. We check the orientation on every drawing we quote — it is part of the free review.

1 · Set the support steel first
Support spacing is the clear span of the bearing bars — fix it before the panel size, and the bar selection follows. Closer supports mean lighter bars for the same load; wider supports mean heavier bars. Either way, the number belongs in the drawing, not in guesswork.
2 · Read deflection across the span
For the same load and bar, deflection grows with the span far faster than the bar size tames it — one extra support line mid-route usually does more than a heavier section. Tell us the deflection you can accept and we match bars and spans; load tables come with the quote.
3 · Close the edges, fix without welding
