Construction comparison
Wedge Wire Screen vs Press-Locked Close-Mesh vs Welded Bar Grating
Wedge wire is a different construction, not a different size of the same product: profile bars, not flat bearing bars, and slots that are shaped rather than spaced. Here is how the three drain-deck constructions compare — with an honest note on what runs in our own workshop.
| Dimension | Wedge wire screenQuoted per project | Press-locked close-mesh | Welded bar grating |
|---|---|---|---|
| Elements | Shaped profile bars on support rods | Flat bearing bars, cross bars pressed in | Flat bearing bars, cross bars forge-welded |
| Opening | Continuous V-shaped slot, narrow at the top | Square/rectangular close mesh down to 11 / 11 mm | Open mesh, 30 / 40 / 60 mm centers |
| Slot behavior | Slot widens inward — particles pass instead of wedging | Uniform mesh; fine solids stay on top | Largest water passage; debris falls through |
| Load behavior | Profile bars give stiffness at fine openings | Very uniform load distribution; pedestrian comfort | High load capacity at wide spans |
| Typical drain duty | Stormwater inlets, washdown floors, intake screens | Municipal trench, tree pits, heel-proof floors | Trench covers, driveways, loading bays |
| Our supply | Quoted per project — not a stock line, no wedge-wire program | In-house — press-lock machine | In-house — electro-forging line |
Honest note on our wedge wire position
Wedge wire screens are not a Dengtai stock line and we run no wedge-wire production program — anyone claiming otherwise on this site would be lying to you. Wedge wire drain is quoted per project: the profile bar, slot opening and support arrangement are scoped to your specification before you commit, with material certification part of the offer. For many drain duties — trench runs, heel-proof floors, kerb lines — our in-house close-mesh press-locked grating (11/11 mm) does the same job from our own press line, and we will say when it does.

How the construction works
Profile Bars and the V-Shaped Slot
1 · The V-shaped slot
Each opening is narrow at the walking surface and widens underneath. A grain of grit that fits through the entry keeps falling — it cannot turn and jam. That is the self-cleaning geometry wedge wire is specified for, and it comes from bar shape, not from coatings or maintenance.
2 · Profile bars on support rods
Wedge-shaped bars are set side by side on support rods, and the gap between adjacent bars becomes one continuous, unbroken slot. Water enters along the full length of the panel — there are no discrete holes to block, which is why the format suits high-flow intake duty.
3 · Our in-house equivalent
For drain duties that need fine, heel-proof openings rather than a true V-slot, our press-lock machine makes close-mesh panels down to 11/11 mm from our stock Q235B, SS304 and SS316. That is a stock program; wedge wire is not. Tell us the duty and we will say which one fits.
Why specify wedge wire
Why Drain Specifiers Ask for a Wedge Wire Drain
High-flow by geometry
A continuous slot admits water along its whole length, and the V-shape keeps the entry clear of grit — high-flow intake with a low clogging tendency, the reason wedge wire drains handle storm water on real sites without a fine mesh to blind.
Heavy duty, built to last
The profile bar is deep in the direction of load, so a wedge wire drain holds truck wheels and cleaning traffic at fine slot openings where a thin screen would fold. Slot openings and bar sections are set to your loads in the per-project quote.
Made to spec, any length, with mill cert
Slot opening, panel size and run length follow your drawing — wholesale runs or small trial orders, factory-direct with no middlemen. Certified & tested, reports on request: the material certification for a quoted wedge wire screen is part of the offer, not an afterthought.
Applications
Where Wedge Wire Drains Are Specified
Duties where the continuous fine slot earns its place: water arriving fast, solids that must pass, surfaces that get washed down. Each of these is also a duty our close-mesh press-locked line can quote in-house — the RFQ will settle which construction fits.
Stormwater & kerb inlets
Fast sheet flow with grit and litter in it — the V-slot drinks the water while the worst solids wash over. See the stormwater steel grid for open-mesh variants.
Food & washdown floors
Daily hose-down with solids in the water: the fine slot passes the wash, keeps the floor drainable. SS304 / SS316 equivalents on our stainless drain grating line.
Water treatment & intake screens
The classic wedge wire duty — screening water while it moves, slot by unbroken slot. Quoted per project with the slot opening scoped to your solids load.
Heel-proof pedestrian floors
Fine, uniform openings that a shoe heel cannot enter — our in-house answer is the 11/11 close-mesh press-locked panel, quoted directly from our own press line.

Materials & test documents
Every heat of our stock Q235B, SS304 or SS316 enters production with its mill test certificate verified at goods-in — the first of our five QC stages. A quoted wedge wire screen ships with the same documentation discipline, scoped before you commit:
- Mill test certificate to EN 10204 Type 3.1
- Factory inspection report with every shipment
- Declaration of Conformity prepared per order destination

EN 124 Load Class Guide for Wedge Wire Drain Runs
Class names referenced to EN 124, the public standard for gully covers and gratings — a sizing reference for the conversation, not a certification claim. The RSA promise "truck wheels alike" lives in the bottom two rows.
| EN 124 class | Typical duty | Recommended steel (our range) | Construction that fits |
|---|---|---|---|
| A15 | Pedestrian & cycle areas | 20×3 mm bars / light profile | Wedge wire slot or close mesh 11/11 |
| B125 | Kerbside & light traffic | 25×3 – 30×3 mm | Wedge wire inlet or press-locked panel |
| C250 | Commercial kerbs & parking bays | 30×5 – 40×5 mm | Press-locked or welded panel |
| D400 | Carriageways & loading bays | 50×5 mm up to 100×8 mm | Welded bar grating — quoted per layout |
Produced to EN 124 classes
Wedge wire screens and equivalent panels produced to the class you specify — final construction confirmed in your itemized quote against the actual wheel and foot loads.
Mill cert on every construction
Q235B, SS304 and SS316 heats verified at goods-in; for a quoted wedge wire screen the sourced-material certificate is scoped in the offer, so the slot you specified rides on the steel you were promised.
CE & SGS tested
Certified & tested, reports on request — we show documents you can verify, not a certificate wall.

FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
Is wedge wire drain a stock Dengtai product?
No - and we say so plainly. Wedge wire screens are not a Dengtai stock line and we run no wedge-wire production program. Wedge wire drain is quoted per project, scoped to your slot opening and load specification with the material certification included; for many drain duties our in-house press-locked close-mesh (11/11 mm) is the honest equivalent, made on our own press line.
What makes wedge wire slots self-cleaning?
Each slot is formed between two profile bars with a V-shaped cross-section: narrow at the wear face, wider underneath. Particles that pass the narrow entry keep going instead of wedging, and the continuous unbroken slot admits water along its full length - high-flow intake with a low clogging tendency by geometry, not by coating.
How do I request wedge wire drain from Dengtai?
Send your layout - slot opening, panel sizes, loads and quantities - through the quote form below. You receive an itemized quote within 24 hours; on our in-house lines samples ship in 5–7 working days and production runs 15–25 working days after drawing confirmation. Whatever the construction, you receive mill test certificates (EN 10204 Type 3.1) with every shipment.
