Load class guide

One Cover, Many Floors — Load Framing by Floor Type

A floor drain cover in a lobby corridor and one in a washdown plant share nothing but their job title. Frame the load by what crosses the floor — shoes, trolleys or trucks — and the mesh, bar size and material follow. Class groups below are referenced to EN 124.

Class (referenced to EN 124) Floor duty & typical location Typical construction from our range Heel-proof option
A15Pedestrian-only floors — lobbies, corridors, wet rooms, plant floorsWelded cover, light 20×3 mm bearing bars, 30/40 mm centersYes — 11/11 mm close mesh for public interiors
B125Commercial floors with light delivery traffic — retail backrooms, kitchensWelded 25×3 to 30×3 mm bearing bars, 30 mm centers, banded edgesYes — close mesh in staff and public zones
C250Parking decks, aprons and kerbside edgesWelded 40×5 mm bearing bars, 30/40 mm centersOn request — expect reduced flow
D400Yards, truck crossings, heavy washdown plant floorsWelded heavy bars up to 100×8 mm, 30/40 mm centers, optional frameNot typical — open mesh keeps the flow

Class groups are public EN 124 parameters, not a certification claim — your final construction is confirmed with load tables inside the 24-hour quote. Not sure which class your floor needs? Tell us what crosses it — shoes, trolleys or forklifts — and we will spec the cover.

Sizing to the opening

How a Floor Drain Cover Is Sized and Fitted

clear opening recess

1 · Measure the clear opening

Length and width of the opening — or diameter for round drains — plus how the cover will sit: on a bearing ledge, in a recess, or inside a frame. A photo and a sketch are enough to start.

banded edge, cut to opening

2 · Cut and banded to fit

The cover is cut to your dimensions with a banded edge all round — square, rectangular or round, any length. Notches for pipe penetrations and lifting or hinge details are taken from your drawing.

3 · Finished for the floor

Carbon steel covers go to our certified galvanizing partner for hot-dip galvanizing (ASTM A123 / ISO 1461) — typically 2–3 days, already counted inside your production window. Stainless covers ship for wet interiors.

Why a factory cover

Why Buyers Order Their Floor Drain Cover From the Mill

Custom floor drain cover, any length

Covers, frames and grates from one factory, cut and banded to your drawings. Wholesale runs and small trial orders both welcome — replacement covers for existing floors included.

High-flow open mesh

Open bar mesh keeps water moving and lets grit drop into the channel instead of pooling on the floor — the same floor drain grating geometry used on our trench and gully covers.

Heel-proof close-mesh option

Press-locked close mesh brings openings down to 11/11 mm — too narrow for a shoe heel or trolley wheel to enter. It is the geometry of choice for public interiors, and the water still gets through.

Applications

Which Floor Is Your Cover Sitting In?

From a pedestrian indoor floor to a washdown plant, the duty climbs — and the cover follows. These are the four floors we quote most.

Pedestrian indoor floors

Lobbies, corridors and wet rooms — light welded covers or heel-proof close mesh where the public walks.

Kitchens & food plants

Daily washdown and moisture — SS304 covers as standard, SS316 where cleaning chemicals run hot.

Loading bays & aprons

Wheels and pallet trucks cross these floors — heavier bars, closer centers, hot-dip galvanized against standing water.

Plant rooms & washdown areas

Constant water and process splash — heavy-duty open-mesh covers, stainless where corrosion leads the spec.

Materials & test documents

Every heat of Q235B, SS304 or SS316 enters production with its mill test certificate verified at goods-in — the first of our five QC stages. Covers leave with documentation, not promises:

  • Mill test certificate to EN 10204 Type 3.1
  • Factory inspection report with every shipment
  • Declaration of Conformity prepared per order destination

SS304 stainless

SS316 stainless

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I size a floor drain cover to my opening?

Measure the clear opening — length and width, or diameter for round drains — and note how the cover will sit: on a bearing ledge, in a recess, or inside a frame. Send those dimensions with the floor type and traffic, and the cover is cut to fit with banded edges. Odd shapes and pipe penetrations are cut from your sketch or drawing.

Do you offer heel-proof floor drain covers?

Yes. Press-locked close mesh brings openings down to 11/11 mm — too narrow for a shoe heel or trolley wheel to enter — while water still passes through. It is the usual choice for pedestrian interiors and public floors where an open bar mesh would be too wide.

Which material should a floor drain cover use in wet interiors?

Q235B carbon steel with hot-dip galvanizing suits mostly dry indoor and outdoor floors. SS304 handles routine washdown and moisture; SS316 is the pick where chlorides, cleaning chemicals or salt are present. Every order ships with a mill test certificate to EN 10204 Type 3.1.
