Match the Drainage Problem to the Grid Spec
A steel grid for drainage is not one product — it is four decisions made in the right order. How much water arrives, how big the debris is, what rolls across the top, and what the environment does to the steel. Whether your drawing calls it a metal grid for drainage or a drain grid, the spec is decided by the site, not the label. Read your site against this table, then follow the format page that matches your answer.
| Drainage problem | What it drives | Grid spec to order | Format page |
|---|---|---|---|
| High water volume | Open area — peak storm flow must pass through, not over | Wider 60 mm bar spacing for maximum openings, bearing bars tall enough to keep the water path clear | Stormwater steel grid |
| Coarse debris — leaves, grit, litter | Openings large enough to pass debris, edges strong enough to rake clean | 40–60 mm centers with banded edges; panel length set to your run so raking never fights a join | Trench grating |
| Wheel loads — trucks, forklifts | Bar height and thickness govern capacity, not overall weight | Bar sections stepped up toward 100×8 mm, closer 30 mm centers, thick banding all round | Trench drain covers |
| Pedestrians crossing in shoes | Openings must stay underfoot, not trap heels or drop litter in | Close mesh down to 11/11 mm on the walking zone, standard mesh on the run either side | Floor drain covers |
| Rain, soil and buried contact | Steel needs a sacrificial coating that survives the ground | Q235B carbon steel, hot-dip galvanized to ASTM A123 / ISO 1461 | Galvanized channel grating |
| Constant water, washdown, salt | No coating to scratch off — the alloy itself resists | SS304 for general washdown, SS316 where chlorides and cleaning chemicals are aggressive | Stainless drain grating |
| Water collecting at one point | A single sump cover, sized to the grate not the pipe | Square or rectangular gully grid, banded, sized to the chamber opening | Metal gully grid |
Two answers on one site? That is normal — most drainage layouts mix two grid specs. Send the layout — we will return the spec for each run inside the 24-hour quote.
How specifiers decide
From Site Data to a Grid You Can Order
1 · Size the water
Catchment area and rainfall set the flow the grid must pass. More water means wider spacing and more openings — the grid is sized from the water backwards, never forwards from a stock sheet.
2 · Match the load
Foot traffic, trolleys or truck wheels decide bar height and thickness, and bearing bars must run across the shortest span. This is where a drain grid becomes a heavy duty drainage grid.
3 · Set material & finish
Q235B plus hot-dip galvanizing covers rain, soil and buried duty; SS304 or SS316 takes over where the grid sits in permanent water, washdown spray or salt. Banded edges and fixing layout finish the spec.
Why specify this grid
What a Factory-Direct Drainage Grid Buys You
High-flow drainage grid
Open geometry sized to the catchment, so peak storm water passes through the grid instead of ponding on your apron. Specified from flow, not from a stock list.
Heavy duty under truck wheels
Bar sections step up toward 100×8 mm with closer centers where delivery vehicles cross — the same grid that drains the yard also carries the truck that services it.
Made to spec, any length, with mill certs
Grids cut and banded to your drawings at any run length, shipped factory-direct with no middlemen — and mill test certificates (EN 10204 Type 3.1) travel with every order.
Applications
Drainage Problems This Grid Solves
Every one of these sites is a different row in the chooser above — same steel grid family, different spacing, bar and finish.
Yard & driveway runs
Linear trench grating under wheels — banded edges, load-matched bars.
Gullies & point drains
One square grid over one sump — sized to the chamber, raked clean.
Stormwater & catchment
Wide-open grids that take peak flow and pass leaves straight through.
Washdown & coastal areas
SS304 / SS316 grids for permanent water, spray and cleaning chemicals.

Materials & test documents
Every heat of Q235B, SS304 or SS316 enters production with its mill test certificate verified at goods-in — the first of our five QC stages. Grids leave with documentation, not promises:
- Mill test certificates (EN 10204 Type 3.1) with every shipment
- Factory inspection report with every shipment
- Declaration of Conformity prepared per order destination
Standards & compliance
Produced to Recognized Standards — Documents on Request
Grates referenced to EN 124
Drain covers are referenced to EN 124 classes A15–D400 by duty. State the wheel load in your RFQ and the bar section is matched to it.
ASTM A123 / ISO 1461 HDG
Galvanized coating thickness checked by sampling on every galvanized batch before the grid is released — outdoor and buried drainage depends on it.
CE & SGS tested
Certified & tested, reports on request — we show documents you can verify, not a certificate wall.

FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
What bar spacing should a steel grid for drainage have?
Match the spacing to your debris and flow. 60 mm centers give the most open area for high storm-water volume, 40 mm suits general trench duty, and 30 mm or 11/11 mm close mesh is used where heels, small litter or sediment must stay on top. Tell us the catchment and the debris in your RFQ and we set the spacing.
What is the lead time for drainage grid panels?
Samples ship in 5–7 working days and mass production runs 15–25 working days after drawing confirmation, both including hot-dip galvanizing. Rush production in 10–15 days is possible with a surcharge — ask in your quote.
Do you accept small trial orders, and how is drainage grid shipped?
Yes — small trial orders are welcome. Drainage grid ships worldwide from Tianjin Port, FOB Tianjin as standard with EXW or CIF negotiable. Pricing is itemized in your quote; we do not publish a fixed price list.
