Sidewalk duty

Choosing the Right Grating for Public Sidewalk Duty

A sidewalk panel answers to the public, not just to plant maintenance: pedestrians in ordinary shoes, cyclists crossing the grille, rain, de-icing salt and years outdoors. Mesh class, top surface and finish decide how the panel behaves on day one and year ten.

How the panel is built

Close Mesh, Flush Top, Galvanized Finish

11 / 11 mm openings heel-proof close mesh

1 · Press-locked close mesh

Cross bars are pressed into notched bearing bars with no weld heat, so public-walking panels stay flat and the 11 / 11 mm openings stay true — heels, cane tips and bicycle tires stay on top.

flush top plane banded edge bar

2 · Flush top & banded edges

Bars are brought to one plane and closed with a banded edge bar, so the panel sits flush with the sidewalk surface — no toe-catchers, no trip lip at the frame, comfortable underfoot.

3 · Hot-dip galvanizing by default

Outdoor sidewalk duty gets ASTM A123 / ISO 1461 hot-dip galvanizing as standard — salt spray, de-icing chemicals and standing rain are the everyday load. The galvanizing cycle sits inside your production window, not on top of it.

Why specify our sidewalk grating

Anti-Slip by Geometry, Made to Your Drawings

Serrated or plain — anti-slip as geometry

Serrated bearing bars add tooth edges for wet or frosty sidewalks; plain bars give the smooth, flush top that high-footfall public walks usually specify. We describe both honestly as surface geometry — the choice stays with your spec.

Custom sidewalk grating to drawing

Vault covers, duct runs, curb-line drainage, bridge sidewalks — panels cut and banded to your opening sizes. Samples in 5–7 working days and small trial orders welcome before the full run.

Factory-direct, shipped worldwide

You buy from the mill, not a trading desk: an itemized FOB Tianjin quote within 24 hours, free drawing review, and installation drawings plus fixing layout with the order. EXW or CIF negotiable.

Sidewalk applications

Where Sidewalk Grating Works

Steel in the public right-of-way: covers that carry pedestrians over what runs beneath, and grating that keeps the walking surface drained and visible.

Sidewalk vault & duct covers

Close-mesh panels over utility vaults, cable ducts and basements — flush with the walk, removable for access.

Bridge sidewalks & overpasses

Open-mesh bridge grating sheds rain and slush on sidewalk zones of bridges and elevated walkways.

Drainage in sidewalks

Curb-line channel and trench covers that take street water off the walk — heel-safe edges for passing foot traffic.

Kerb crossings & service edges

Heavy-duty panels where vehicles cross the sidewalk to driveways and service yards — thicker bars, closer centers.

Materials & test documents

Every heat of Q235B, SS304 or SS316 enters production with its mill test certificate verified at goods-in — the first of our five QC stages. Sidewalk panels leave with documentation, not promises:

  • Mill test certificate to EN 10204 Type 3.1
  • Factory inspection report with every shipment
  • Declaration of Conformity prepared per order destination

Standards & compliance

Produced to Recognized Standards — Documents on Request

ANSI / NAAMM MBG 531

Sidewalk panels produced to MBG 531 reference practice, with weld and press joints checked on our five-stage QC plan.

ASTM A123 / ISO 1461 HDG

Galvanized coating thickness checked by sampling on every galvanized batch before sidewalk panels are released.

Accessibility-friendly geometry

Close-mesh 11 / 11 mm openings and flush, smooth tops are what accessible-route specifiers usually ask for. We produce to your geometry — we do not issue accessibility compliance claims. ADA bar grating geometry →

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What mesh should sidewalk grating have for public foot traffic?

Press-locked close mesh with 11/11 mm openings is the usual choice where the public walks in ordinary shoes — heels and bicycle tires cannot enter the openings. Where only maintenance staff walk, standard welded mesh at 30/40/60 mm centers keeps the panel lighter and more open. Send your sidewalk drawings and we will propose the mesh class inside the 24-hour quote.

Is sidewalk grating hot-dip galvanized?

Yes — hot-dip galvanizing to ASTM A123 / ISO 1461 is the default finish for outdoor sidewalk duty, and it is already inside the lead times: samples in 5–7 working days, mass production in 15–25 working days after drawing confirmation.

Can you supply sidewalk vault and duct covers to my drawings?

Yes — panels are cut and banded to your opening sizes, with frames and fixing clips quoted as companion items. Small trial orders are welcome, and every quote is itemized per m² or per ton; we do not publish a fixed price list.
