Steel grating material comparison

Q235B, HDG, SS 304 or SS 316?

Material choice follows the environment. SS 304 — the highlighted row — is the grade that covers most wet-duty floors without paying for marine alloy; every other row links to its own material page.

Material Corrosion behavior Typical environment Relative cost Docs & delivery
Carbon steel Q235B Needs paint or zinc to resist rust Dry indoor platforms, warehouse floors Baseline of the four MTC EN 10204 3.1 with every shipment
Hot-dip galvanized Zinc coating protects the steel beneath Outdoor walkways, trench covers, municipal drainage Moderate MTC + HDG via certified partner, 2–3 days
SS 304 Corrosion-resistant with no coating at all Washdown areas, food-adjacent zones, general outdoor Higher MTC EN 10204 3.1 per heat — samples 5–7 days
SS 316 Adds chloride resistance for salt service Marine, dock, coastal, chemical exposure Highest MTC EN 10204 3.1 per heat — samples 5–7 days

Where SS 304 stops being the right grade

SS 304 carries most corrosion duty until chlorides enter the picture — coastal air, docks, brine tanks or heavy de-icing salt are the point where it can pit. That is the job of 316 Stainless Steel Grating. Describe the duty in your RFQ and we will recommend the grade, honestly — including when 304 is simply enough.

Construction options

SS 304, Built Two Ways

The grade stays the same; the construction follows your floor. Both lines run in our own workshop, on the same drawings and the same heat traceability.

bearing bars cross bars forged joints

1 · Electro-forged welded

Every bearing-bar / cross-bar intersection pressure-forged in one pass — the default SS 304 construction for platforms, walkways and trench covers at 30 / 40 / 60 mm centers. See the welded line →

close mesh cross bar pressed into notched bearing bar

2 · Press-locked close mesh

Cross bars pressed into notched bars — no weld heat, perfectly flat panels, mesh down to 11 / 11 mm for heel-proof hygiene floors. See press-locked grating →

3 · Inspected & packed for export

Five-stage QC ends with weld-point inspection and a final release report. Panels leave steel-strapped on export pallets for the roughly 400 km run to Tianjin Port.

Why specify 304

Why SS 304 Is the Default Stainless Grade

SS 304 is the common 18/8 austenitic grade — the workhorse of stainless flooring. If your duty is wet but not salty, it is almost always enough grade.

Rust-resistant, coating-free

As an austenitic stainless, 304 resists corrosion in fresh water, humidity and daily washdown without paint or zinc — and there is no recoating cycle to budget for, ever.

Made to spec, any size

Panels cut and banded to your drawings from small MOQ — bearing bars, spacing and panel dimensions all specified by you, with free drawing review inside the 24-hour quote.

Heavy-duty options included

The same 304 grade runs with bearing bars up to 100×8 mm for wheel and plant traffic — load tables on request with your quote, serrated top optional for wet grip.

Where 304 is enough

Where SS 304 Grating Is Enough

Four duty classes cover the great majority of SS 304 floors. If your site sits in one of these, you rarely need to pay for a higher alloy.

Indoor washdown areas

Daily hose-down floors in plants and packing lines — open mesh drains the water through instead of pooling it.

Food-adjacent zones

Corrosion-resistant, cleanable surfaces for food-adjacent processing and wash areas where painted steel cannot be specified.

General outdoor duty

Rain, humidity and freeze–thaw away from the coast — outdoor platforms, walkways and stair treads without salt spray.

Wet & freshwater plant areas

Damp process floors, tank surrounds and fresh-water channels — wet service with no chlorides in the water.

Materials & test documents

Every heat of SS304 (or SS316, if you upgrade) enters production with its mill test certificate verified at goods-in — the first of our five QC stages. Panels leave with documentation, not promises:

  • Mill test certificate to EN 10204 Type 3.1, one per heat
  • Factory inspection report with every shipment
  • Declaration of Conformity prepared per order destination

Mill Test Certificates (EN 10204 Type 3.1)

We provide mill test certificates (EN 10204 Type 3.1) with every shipment, so the grade on your drawing is the grade in your panel — traced heat by heat, from the steel mill to the container.

One certificate per heat

SS 304 bars are bought by heat number, and each heat's certificate is checked at goods-in — the first stage of our five-stage QC plan, before a single bar is cut.

What the certificate states

Grade, heat number and the mill's reported chemical and mechanical values — the document your inspectors and hygiene auditors ask to see.

Ready to preview

Certified & tested, reports on request — ask in your RFQ and we will preview the exact certificate wording alongside your quote, before you commit.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Is SS 304 grating enough for outdoor use?

Yes, for general outdoor duty away from coastlines — platforms, walkways and stair treads that see rain, humidity and wash-down splash. Near the sea, on docks or over brine, step up to SS 316: chloride exposure is where 304 can pit.

How do mill test certificates work for SS 304 grating?

We provide mill test certificates (EN 10204 Type 3.1) with every shipment. Each certificate traces the heat number behind your panels and the mill's reported chemical and mechanical values, and it is verified at goods-in before a single bar is cut.

Can I get SS 304 grating welded or press-locked?

Both. Welded panels run on our electro-forging line at 30 / 40 / 60 mm centers; press-locked panels go down to 11 / 11 mm close mesh with no weld heat. Samples of either ship in 5–7 working days.
