Material selection
Which Steel for Your Floor: Q235B, SS304 or SS316?
Choosing floor grating steel is first a material decision, then a dimension decision. Carbon steel carries the load; the grade decides how the floor fights corrosion — and whether you pay for a coating or for an alloy. That is the honest comparison behind any floor steel grating order, and this page runs through it for floor duty.
| Dimension | Q235B + HDGDefault | SS304 | SS316 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Best floor zones | Dry plant, workshop and platform floors | Washdown, food-plant and clean-area floors | Marine, pool and chloride-rich process floors |
| Corrosion strategy | Base steel protected by zinc coating | Corrosion resistance built into the alloy | Added resistance to chlorides and chemicals |
| Finish options | Black (uncoated) or hot-dip galvanized to ASTM A123 / ISO 1461 | Mill finish stainless | Mill finish stainless |
| Slip surface | Plain or serrated bars | Plain or serrated bars | Plain or serrated bars |
| Floor maintenance | Sweeping; coating inspection on weathered floors | Hose-down cleaning, no coating to maintain | Hose-down cleaning in aggressive media |
| Documents | MTC EN 10204 Type 3.1 per heat | MTC EN 10204 Type 3.1 per heat | MTC EN 10204 Type 3.1 per heat |

Three floor decisions
Grade, Finish, Surface — the Decisions That Define a Steel Floor
1 · The grade
All three grades carry the same bar sizes and spacings — the alloy decides the corrosion fight. Match the grade to the floor environment, not to habit.
2 · The finish
Carbon steel floors ship black for indoor duty or hot-dip galvanized for weather — immersion bonds the zinc to every bar, checked by sampling on every galvanized batch. Details on the hot-dip galvanized grating page.
3 · The surface
Plain bars keep floors easy to clean; serrated teeth grip wet or oily footwear. Any grade, any finish — the serration is cut into the bearing bar before assembly.
Why steel floors
Why Buyers Put Steel Under Their Floors
Heavy-duty without solid plate
Bearing bars up to 100×8 mm carry wheel and foot loads while the open mesh keeps the floor light, ventilated and self-draining.
Non-slip underfoot, wet or dry
Serrated bearing bars give the floor bite where oil, ice or wash water makes smooth surfaces dangerous — an option on every grade.
Samples first, small MOQ start
Test a floor panel before you commit — samples in 5–7 working days, and small trial orders welcome before the full floor package.
Applications
Where a Grating Steel Floor Wins
A grating steel floor carries traffic while it drains, ventilates and lets light through — the same panel serves duty that would trap water on solid plate.
Plant & workshop floors
Galvanized Q235B panels over pits and process areas — spills fall through, not underfoot.
Mezzanine & platform floors
Open-mesh flooring that adds levels without blocking light or sprinkler reach below.
Washdown & hygiene floors
SS304 floors that hose clean with no coating to wash away — food and chemical areas.
Outdoor walkways & stairs
Hot-dip galvanized floors and matching treads that shed rain, snow and ice year-round.

Materials & test documents
Every heat of Q235B, SS304 or SS316 enters production with its mill test certificate verified at goods-in — the first of our five QC stages. Whatever grade your floor takes, the paperwork follows the steel:
- Mill test certificate to EN 10204 Type 3.1 with every shipment
- Coating thickness checked by sampling on every galvanized batch
- Factory inspection report with every shipment
Standards & compliance
Floor Panels Produced to Recognized Standards — Documents on Request
ANSI / NAAMM MBG 531
Floor panels produced to MBG 531 reference practice, with joint inspection on our five-stage QC plan.
ASTM A123 / ISO 1461 HDG

FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
Q235B or stainless — which steel for a floor?
For dry plant and platform floors, Q235B carbon steel with hot-dip galvanizing is the default choice. SS304 pays off in washdown and food-plant floors; SS316 is the pick where chlorides, salts or process chemicals attack the surface. Tell us the floor environment and we will recommend a grade in your quote.
What is the lead time for steel floor grating?
Samples ship in 5–7 working days and mass production runs 15–25 working days after drawing confirmation, both including hot-dip galvanizing for carbon steel panels.
Can floor grating, stair treads and covers ship in one order?
Yes — floor grating, treads and covers are quoted and produced together in matching material and finish, so one RFQ covers the whole floor package. Small trial orders are welcome.
