Basin plus grate, one system
A Catch Basin Drain Is Two Parts Doing Two Jobs
Unlike a linear channel, a catch basin collects water at one low point: the basin settles silt and grit below the outlet while the grate above carries whatever traffic crosses the opening. A metal catch basin drain only works when both parts are specified together — the basin sets the grate size, the traffic sets the grate class, and the sump depth sets how long the system runs before it needs cleaning.
| Component | Job in the system | What you specify | How we supply it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Catch basin grate | Carries wheels and feet across the opening while water and grit pass through | Clear opening, load class, mesh opening, plain or serrated | Welded or press-locked panels from our in-house lines, cut and banded to the opening |
| Basin body | Collects storm water and traps silt below the outlet so the pipe stays clear | Internal plan size, depth and sump, wall steel, outlet size and invert | Fabricated from Q235B plate in our workshop, or SS304 / SS316 for washdown duty |
| Edge frame | Seats the grate and spreads wheel loads into the concrete surround | Frame profile, seating method, anchoring | Sourced companion items, quoted as line items and shipped with the order |
| Debris basket | Lifts out for cleaning so the basin is serviced without entry | Basket size, lifting arrangement, expected cleaning cycle | Sourced companion items matched to your basin internal size |
| Outlet & connections | Hands the settled flow over to the pipe network at the set invert | Outlet diameter, position, connecting pipework | Sourced companion items, fixed layout shown on the assembly drawing |
Grates and basin bodies come from one factory to your drawings; frames, baskets and fixings ride along as companion line items — one purchase order closes the whole basin. Not sure how to split it? Send your basin layout — we will spec it inside the 24-hour quote.
How to spec a basin
Four Decisions Define a Catch Basin Drain
Fix the grate to the opening and the traffic
The clear opening sets the grate size; the traffic above sets the class. A driveway basin takes far less panel than a loading dock — pick bar height and spacing from our range, with close mesh only where people walk across.
Set the basin depth for the debris load
The sump is the working part of a catch basin: deeper storage survives longer between clean-outs on sandy or leafy sites. Depth is set to your cleaning cycle, not to a stock size.
Manage debris before it reaches the pipe
Mesh opening, debris basket and sump depth work together to keep grit and litter out of the connection. State the expected debris — sand, leaves, wash-down solids — and the assembly is specified around it.
Choose finish and fixings
Hot-dip galvanized Q235B is the default for outdoor basins; SS304 or SS316 where wash-down chemicals or chlorides attack zinc. Frames, lifting keys and fixings join the same order as line items.
Why the assembly, not the part
Why Specifiers Order the Catch Basin Drain as One Assembly
High flow through, full loads over
An open-mesh catch basin grate passes storm water and grit straight into the sump while the panel carries the wheels above it. The mesh keeps debris out of the pipe; the bars keep traffic out of the basin.
One drawing, one quote, one shipment
Grate and basin body come from one factory to your drawings, batch tested with mill certificates on request. Frames, baskets and fixings ship with them — no middlemen between your layout and the mill.
Any opening size, small MOQ
Grates are cut and banded to the actual clear opening — new build or replacing a cracked casting on an existing basin. Small trial orders are welcome, so you can prove the fit before the full site order.
Applications
Where Metal Catch Basin Drains Work
A metal catch basin drain earns its place wherever water pools at one point and heavy traffic crosses it — the open grate keeps the surface usable, the sump keeps the pipe network clean.
Loading docks & aprons
Heavy-duty grates over deep sumps where trucks cross the collection point daily.
Driveways & car parks
Kerbside and yard low points with grates sized for cars and delivery vans.
Industrial washdown areas
SS304 / SS316 basins where chemicals and daily hosing attack zinc coatings.
Roadway low points & gullies
Point collection where a kerb gully takes the run-off a channel cannot reach.
Specifications
Catch Basin Grate Class Guide and Assembly Specifications
Class names are referenced to EN 124, the European classification for gully tops and covers, as a common language for load selection. Class choice is confirmed per project and stated in your quote — documentation on request, never assumed.
Load class, referenced to EN 124
| Class | Test load | Typical location | Typical grate from our range |
|---|---|---|---|
| A15 | 15 kN | Pedestrian precincts, gardens, basements | Light welded or press-locked, bars from 20×3 mm |
| B125 | 125 kN | Kerbsides, car parks, driveways | 25×3 to 30×3 mm bars at 30/40 mm centers |
| C250 | 250 kN | Carriageways, delivery yards | 30×5 to 40×5 mm bars at 30/40 mm centers |
| D400 | 400 kN | Truck lanes, loading docks, aprons | 50×5 to 100×8 mm bars at 30/40 mm centers |
Class names referenced to EN 124 only as a selection guide; grates are produced to the class you specify, with test reports on request.
Assembly parameters
| Parameter | Range |
|---|---|
| Grate bearing bars | 20×3 mm to 100×8 mm, plain or serrated |

| Grate size | Cut and banded to the clear opening; panels up to 1.25 m wide |
| Basin body | Q235B steel plate fabricated to drawing; SS304 / SS316 optional |
| Finish | Hot-dip galvanized to ASTM A123 / ISO 1461 |
| Companion items | Edge frames, debris baskets, lifting keys, fixings — sourced, quoted per basin |
| Debris management | Sump depth and mesh opening set to the site debris load and cleaning cycle |

Standards & compliance
Produced to Recognized Standards — Documents on Request
EN 124 class reference
Grating classes referenced to EN 124 for selection guidance only. Grates are produced to the class you specify, and the confirmed class is stated in your quote.
ASTM A123 / ISO 1461 HDG
Basins and grates are galvanized after fabrication, with coating thickness checked by sampling on every batch before release — the wet, buried half of a basin needs it most.
CE & SGS tested
Certified & tested, reports on request. Every heat arrives with its mill test certificate verified, and a DoC plus MTC EN 10204 3.1 ship with the order.

FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the lead time for a catch basin grate and basin?
Samples ship in 5–7 working days and mass production runs 15–25 working days after drawing confirmation, hot-dip galvanizing included. Rush production in 10–15 days is possible with a surcharge — ask in your quote.
Do you supply the whole catch basin drain or only the grate?
Grates and steel basin bodies are fabricated in our own workshop to your drawings. Edge frames, debris baskets, lifting keys and fixings are sourced companion items, quoted as line items and shipped with the order so one delivery closes the basin.
How do I size a grate for an existing catch basin?
Measure the clear opening of the basin and send it with the traffic it must carry — grates are cut and banded to the actual opening, with bar height and spacing chosen for the wheels above. Small trial orders are welcome, and pricing is itemized in your quote; we do not publish a fixed price list.
