Edge options compared
Toe Plate vs Banded Edge vs Open Edge
Every grating floor eventually meets an edge. Here is how the three edge treatments compare — and an honest note on what our workshop builds itself versus what is sourced to match.
| Dimension | Open Edge | Banded Edge | Banded Edge + Toe Plate |
|---|---|---|---|
| Construction | Bearing bar ends left exposed, closed only by the last cross bar | Flat band bar welded across the end of every bearing bar | Band bar plus an upstand plate running along the open side |
| What it stops | Nothing — small items roll straight off the deck | Squares the panel and carries loads across the edge | Retains small parts and tools; guards feet at height |
| Load at the edge | Edge not for walking across or lifting by | Band carries transverse loads and keeps the panel square | Band carries the load — the toe plate works as a screen, not structure |
| Typical placement | Low-traffic cut panels, closed perimeters | Most walkway, platform and tread edges | Mezzanine and platform edges that border a fall or an aisle |
| Our supply | In-house fabrication | In-house — banding welded on our own lines | Band welded in-house; toe plate sourced to match and fitted per drawing |
| Finish | Black or hot-dip galvanized | Hot-dip galvanized, ASTM A123 / ISO 1461 | Matched to the panel finish — galvanized or SS304 / SS316 |

Toe plate basics
What a Toe Plate Does at an Open Edge
A toe plate is a simple idea done well: a low upstand fixed along the open edge of a floor, so the deck holds on to what rolls toward it. Three things it does for an elevated grating floor:
1 · Retains small items
Fasteners, bolts, tools and debris roll across an open mesh deck until something stops them. At a mezzanine edge, a toe plate is that stop — the part stays on the deck instead of dropping onto people or plant below.
2 · Guards feet at height
Where a guardrail protects the upper body, the low edge is the gap it does not cover. A toe plate running along the banded edge closes that low zone at mezzanine and platform borders — a foot-guard at height, plain and simple.
3 · Height is a design convention
Design practice for elevated platforms ranges from a low kick board to roughly knee height — taller where the edge must retain larger items, lower where people step over it all day. There is no single figure we quote: the height per your project spec is the one we build to.
Why order them with your panels
Why Buyers Add Toe Plates to Their Grating Order
Fixings to fit your panels
Toe plates are sized against the panels they run with — band height, bearing bar pitch and panel thickness all read off your spec, so the edge and the deck arrive as one system. Clips, clamps and every bar grating fastener in the same order.
Standard and custom sizes
Stock height and thickness combinations where they suit your edges, or fully custom dimensions to your drawing — galvanized or stainless options, with free drawing review inside the 24-hour quote.
Small MOQ, fast ship
A single mezzanine edge or a full platform program — small orders ship fast, and panels with their companion items quoted FOB Tianjin in one itemized quote. No middlemen between our workshop and your port.
Applications
Where Toe Plates Get Specified
Any elevated grating floor with an edge that borders a fall, an aisle or equipment below is a candidate. Four places they earn their keep:
Mezzanine & storage edges
Small parts stay on the deck instead of dropping onto the picking aisle below.
Elevated walkways & catwalks
Edges beside walkways that cross plant, conveyors or traffic lanes.
Machinery & maintenance decks
Tools and fasteners stay on the platform, not inside the equipment.
Roof plant walkways
Perimeter edges on roof walkways, paired with guardrail posts.

Materials & test documents
The steel in the panels of your set enters production with its mill test certificate verified at goods-in — the first of our five QC stages. Orders leave with documentation, not promises:
- Mill test certificate to EN 10204 Type 3.1 with every panel order
- Factory inspection report with every shipment
- Declaration of Conformity prepared per order destination
Standards & compliance
Produced to Recognized Standards — Documents on Request
Matched HDG finish
Where the set is galvanized, toe plates go through the same hot-dip process as the panels — ASTM A123 / ISO 1461 — so the edge and the deck weather together.
Grade-matched materials
Plate grade follows panel grade — Q235B, SS304 or SS316 — so the edge and the deck are one metal family, avoiding dissimilar contact at the joint.
CE & SGS tested
Certified & tested, reports on request — we show documents you can verify, not a certificate wall.
Where your project references a platform practice such as ANSI/NAAMM MBG 531 or BS 4592, panels are produced to it and the toe plate is built to the height in your spec. Standards hub — market-by-market comparison →
How the order works
Sourced to Match, Integrated In-House
Honest sourcing first: toe plates are companion items we source to match our panels — not a product line of our workshop. What we do in-house is the panel work and the integration. The grating banding bar is welded onto panels on our own lines, and where your drawing calls for a toe plate we size it to that edge, match the finish and pack it with the same shipment.
Send your edge spec
Panel drawing or a simple sketch: edge lengths, toe plate height, material and quantities. Drawing review is free.

FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
Do you manufacture grating toe plates yourselves?
No. Toe plates are sourced companion items supplied alongside our panels — we do not run a toe plate production line. Our workshop does the integration: the band bar is welded onto panels on our own lines, and toe plates are fitted to the banded edge, finish-matched and packed with the same order.
What height should a grating toe plate be?
Height is set by your project spec — there is no single figure we quote. Design practice for elevated platforms ranges from a low kick board to roughly knee height, depending on what the edge must retain and the standard your project works to. Put the height in your drawing and we make to it.
Can I order toe plates without ordering panels?
Yes — small trial orders are welcome, and toe plates can be ordered on their own. They ship fastest with a panel order, where they are finish-matched and packed together. Send your toe plate specs for a quote: small MOQ, fast ship, FOB Tianjin as standard.
