Format comparison

Narrow-Slot Drain vs Open-Grating Channel

A slot drain and a grating-covered channel move the same water — they differ in what stays on top and how you clean the run. This page leads with the slot format; the honest trade-offs are below.

Dimension Narrow-Slot DrainThis format Open-Grating Channel
AppearanceA single narrow slot in the paving — the drain nearly disappearsA visible open grid running along the channel line
Water entryWater sheets across the surface and drops through the slotWater falls straight through the full open area
Debris handlingScreens out cans, bottles and most litter; fine grit settles in the channelLarge debris enters openly — needs upstream baskets or regular raking
Maintenance accessCleaning through sump and outlet points, or removable slot sectionsLift the grating anywhere along the run for full-width cleaning
Load pathSlot top carries wheel loads on a closed steel frameBearing bars span the open channel at 30 / 40 / 60 mm centers
Best suitedPaved plazas, footpaths, kerb lines with light debrisHeavy debris zones: yards, washdown areas, leafy streets

Honest note on heavy debris zones

If your drain collects solids — machining chips, washdown grit, heavy leaf loads — a full-grating channel is usually the better tool, because every metre opens for shoveling and flushing. A slot only screens what you then have to flush out from the ends. We supply both formats and will say so in the quote: compare the galvanized channel drain and trench grating lines, or send both layouts and we price them side by side.

Not sure which format fits your site? Send your drawings — we will spec it inside the 24-hour quote.

How the formats are built

One Channel Line, Two Ways to Finish It

paved surface narrow slot channel body

1 · The slot format

A closed galvanized channel sits under the paving with only a narrow slot open to the surface. Water sheets across the pavement and drops in; cans, bottles and most litter stay on top.

removable grating open channel body

2 · The open-grating alternative

The same channel line can carry a full-width metal drainage grate instead. Water and debris enter freely — and every metre of the run lifts for shoveling and flushing.

3 · Hot-dip galvanizing

Channel bodies, slot tops and gratings go to our certified galvanizing partner for ASTM A123 / ISO 1461 hot-dip galvanizing — typically 2–3 days, already counted inside your production window.

Why specify slot format

Why Contractors Specify Galvanized Slot Drainage Grating

High flow, truck-wheel strong

One steel system handles storm water and truck wheels alike. Slot tops close the load path over a steel frame; open-grating runs use bearing bars from 20×3 to 100×8 mm, chosen by load class.

Channel, covers and gratings from one factory

Channel bodies, edge frames, slot tops, gratings and covers are fabricated together to your drawings — no mismatched interfaces between three suppliers, one consistent hot-dip galvanized finish.

Any run length, made to spec

Sections up to 6 m joined to your layout, with outlets, end caps and sump positions cut per drawing. Free drawing review inside the 24-hour quote — built to last, batch tested.

Applications

Where the Slot Format Earns Its Place

Slot drains suit paved surfaces and kerb lines — anywhere the drainage should collect water without collecting the site. A metal drainage grate is not the only way to finish a channel; the slot hides the drain in the paving.

Paved plazas & forecourts

Continuous paving with a single slot to catch sheet flow — safe for heels and trolleys, easy to wash down.

Kerb lines & road edges

A linear slot along the kerb intercepts storm water before it crosses the carriageway; tops rated for crossing traffic.

Driveways & parking areas

Wheel-rated galvanized steel where lighter channel materials crack; slot top or open grating chosen by debris load.

Yards & washdown areas — check first

Where solids, chips or washdown grit enter the drain, a removable-grating channel usually beats any slot — full access for cleaning. We supply both and will tell you which fits.

Materials & test documents

Every heat of Q235B, SS304 or SS316 enters production with its mill test certificate verified at goods-in — the first of our five QC stages. Drainage lines leave with documentation, not promises:

  • Mill test certificate to EN 10204 Type 3.1
  • Factory inspection report with every shipment
  • Declaration of Conformity prepared per order destination

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the lead time for a galvanized steel slot drain order?

Samples ship in 5–7 working days and mass production runs 15–25 working days after drawing confirmation, both including hot-dip galvanizing. Rush production in 10–15 days is possible with a surcharge — ask in your quote.

Slot drain or open-grating channel — which do I need?

Specify a slot drain where the surface should read as continuous paving and debris is mostly leaves and grit: plazas, footpaths and kerb lines. Specify a full-grating channel where heavy debris or washdown solids enter the drain — the removable grating opens every metre for cleaning. Send both layouts in one email and we price them side by side.

How is a galvanized slot drain shipped and priced?

Shipped worldwide from Tianjin Port — FOB Tianjin as standard, EXW or CIF negotiable. Channel bodies, frames, slot tops, gratings and covers are quoted as one itemized package per metre or per m²; we do not publish a fixed price list.
