Reading the designation

How to Read the 11W4 Grating Designation

11W4 is a NAAMM-style bar grating designation — three parts that tell you the bar depth class, the construction, and the cross-bar pitch before you ever see a drawing. Here is what each part means, and where 11W4 grating sits against its W-series neighbors such as 15W4 grating — often typed 15 w 4 grating — and the heavier 19W4.

11

Bearing-bar depth class

The leading digits place the bearing bar on the W-series depth scale. 11 sits at the light, shallow end — which is exactly why the pattern is specified where people walk, not where wheels roll.

W

Welded construction

The letter marks the joining method: bearing bars and cross bars fused at every intersection. We build the equivalent geometry on our electro-forging line; press-locked construction is the alternative when closer mesh is needed.

4

Cross bars at 4 in centers

The trailing number is the cross-bar spacing: 4 in, about 100 mm. On our metric production this pitch is built to order, quoted with the bar size and mesh that match your floor loading.

Need the bearing-bar side of the story — depths, thicknesses and bar counts? See 11W4 bar grating for the bar-spec view, or the spacing-first spelling on our W-19-4 grating page. Not sure which designation your floor needs? Send your drawings — we will spec it inside the 24-hour quote.

Construction options

11W4-Equivalent Panels from Our Own Lines

We do not run a US-gauge stock line — we build the equivalent geometry to order, in the metric sizes our workshop actually makes. Two constructions cover close-pitch duty:

bearing bars cross bars

1 · Electro-forged welded

Close-pitch welded panels on our electro-forging line: bearing bars from 20×3 mm, bar centers at 30 / 40 / 60 mm, every intersection pressure-forged in one pass. The direct route to W-series equivalents. See welded steel grating.

2 · Press-locked close mesh

When openings must stay small — school floors, retail thresholds, public concourses — our press-lock machine goes down to 11 / 11 mm mesh with no weld heat, so panels stay perfectly flat. See press-locked grating.

3 · Galvanized or plain finish

Indoor-floors or washdown duty decides the finish: black steel, or hot-dip galvanized to ASTM A123 / ISO 1461 referenced practice at our certified partner near the mill — already counted inside your production window. Close-mesh options on our close-mesh grating page.

Why specify 11W4

Full 11W4 specs, factory-direct

Specs and size data come from the mill that builds the panels, not a trading desk. Designation reading, mesh options and finish choices in one place — with load tables provided on request.

Close-pitch comfort underfoot

The 11W4 pattern exists for floors where small openings matter: shoes, casters and schoolbags stay on the surface. Our press-locked close mesh reaches 11 / 11 mm openings where the drawing calls for it.

Custom panels, small orders welcome

Custom 11W4 grating cut and banded to your drawings, with samples in 5–7 working days so you can check mesh and finish before committing to the run. Small trial orders are welcome.

Applications

Where 11W4-Style Panels Work

Close-pitch grating is specified wherever the public meets an open mesh floor — drainage still works, but nothing small drops through.

School & campus floors

Entrance mats, covered walkways and plant floors where small openings keep shoes and belongings on the surface.

Retail & public concourses

Mezzanine edges, service floors and thresholds in malls and stations — flat, galvanized, comfortable to cross.

Mezzanines & landings

Light pedestrian duty over plant rooms and storage — close mesh sheds dust and spills while staying walkable.

Sidewalk & trench covers

Public walkway covers with flush tops and heel-safe openings — see our sidewalk grating guide.

Materials & test documents

Every heat of Q235B, SS304 or SS316 enters production with its mill test certificate verified at goods-in — the first of our five QC stages. Panels leave with documentation, not promises:

  • Mill test certificate to EN 10204 Type 3.1
  • Factory inspection report with every shipment
  • Declaration of Conformity prepared per order destination

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What does 11W4 mean on a grating drawing?

11W4 is a NAAMM-style designation: the leading digits give the bearing-bar depth class, the letter W marks welded construction, and the 4 gives cross bars at 4 in (about 100 mm) centers. 11W4 sits at the light, close-pitch end of the W-series, next to 15W4 grating and below 19W4.

Can you supply 11W4 grating equivalents for public floors?

Yes. We build the equivalent geometry on our own lines: welded panels at 30 / 40 / 60 mm bar centers, or press-locked close mesh down to 11 / 11 mm where heel-safe openings matter. The exact bar depth and thickness match is confirmed in your itemized quote, with load tables provided on request.

What is the lead time for 11W4 grating panels?

Samples ship in 5–7 working days and mass production runs 15–25 working days after drawing confirmation, both including hot-dip galvanizing. Rush production in 10–15 days is possible with a surcharge — ask in your quote.
