Riveted vs Welded vs Press-Locked — an Honest Comparison

Riveted grating is the oldest of the three formats: bearing bars and cross bars clamped together and joined by rivets. It is a legacy, derived format for us — quoted to drawings and assessed per project, never a stock program. Our in-house lines are electro-forged welding and press-locking, and for most modern floors those panels do the same job faster. Here is what each construction actually does.

Why riveted still gets specified: bridge-deck and heritage-refurbishment drawings carry riveted details forward, the flat-top walking plane has a traditional appearance engineers trust, and the riveted joint is often described qualitatively as damping vibration under traffic. If your specification demands rivets, send the drawing. If it allows a modern process, we will show you the equivalent.

The modern replacement for riveted floors on new decks: every intersection pressure-forged in one pass on our in-house line — same open mesh, same flat top, faster to produce.

The flat-top walking plane

Flat-top riveted grating keeps the whole walking surface level — the reason it appears in historic floors and bridge decks. Our plain-top welded and press-locked panels give the same level plane for new work.

High-load legacy duty

Riveted panels carry heavy sections for deck duty. For new high-load floors we build heavy-duty welded grating from 20×3 mm to 100×8 mm bars — the modern equivalent, quoted with load context on request.

Samples before you commit

Do you make riveted grating on your own lines?

No — and we would rather say so than oversell. Riveting is not one of our in-house processes; our lines are electro-forged welding and press-locking. Riveted grating enquiries are quoted to drawings and assessed per project, and for most modern projects we recommend our welded or press-locked equivalents instead.

Why is riveted grating still specified at all?

Riveted construction is the legacy method that welded grating replaced, and it survives in two places: bridge-deck and heritage-refurbishment drawings that carry riveted details forward, and buyers who value the traditional flat-top look. The riveted joint is also described qualitatively as damping vibration under traffic. Where the specification allows a modern process, electro-forged panels do the same open-mesh job with faster production.
