What "Square Grating" Means in Trade Language
Buyers say "square grating" and mean three different things — all of them valid, all of them geometry. This page maps every reading to the construction it actually names, so your specification lands on the panel you meant.
| Trade reading | What it describes | Typical construction | How to specify |
|---|---|---|---|
| Square-edged bars | Flat bearing bars with square edges — the standard bar profile, as opposed to I-bars | Plain bars welded or press-locked into panels, from 20×3 mm up to 100×8 mm | Bar depth × thickness, plain or serrated |
| Square openings | Bearing-bar pitch equals cross-bar pitch, so the openings read square | Matched pitches on welded or press-locked panels | Both pitches, e.g. 40 mm × 40 mm centers |
| Twisted square cross bars | The cross member of welded grating — a square bar twisted along its length | Electro-forged into every bearing-bar intersection on our welding line | Cross-bar section and pitch per specification |
| Square mesh, heel-proof | Near-square openings too small for a shoe heel to enter | Press-locked close mesh — no weld heat, flat panels | 11 / 11 mm centers on our press line |
None of these readings is wrong — but only a drawing removes the ambiguity. Send your drawings — we will spec it inside the 24-hour quote.
How the geometry is built
Three Ways Steel Goes Square
1 · Square-edged bearing bars
The workhorse profile: flat bars with square edges, from 20×3 mm up to 100×8 mm. On our press line, square-edged bars run in both directions and interlock — the most literal square-bar construction we make.
2 · Twisted square cross bars
The standard cross member of welded grating: a square bar twisted along its length, pressure-forged into every bearing-bar intersection. The twist keeps an edge facing traffic and gives welded panels their familiar diagonal line.
3 · Matched-pitch square openings
Set the cross-bar pitch equal to the bearing pitch and the openings read square. Clear opening is pitch minus bar thickness — 40 mm pitch over 5 mm bars leaves a 35 mm square opening.
Why specify square
Why Buyers Specify Square Construction
In-house made, flat off the line
Square-edged and square-mesh panels come off our own electro-forging and press lines — even flatness without post-weld straightening, held through the five-stage QC plan.
Load behavior you can specify
Bar depth sets strength, pitch sets openness, and matched-pitch square mesh spreads point loads in both directions. Capacity is confirmed per span in your quote — load tables on request.
Custom squares, small MOQ
Any pitch pair and any bar size between 20×3 and 100×8 mm, cut and banded to your drawings. Small trial orders welcome — full containers are calculated per loading plan.
Applications
Where Square Openings Earn Their Keep
A square grid is more than a look — matched pitches change how loads travel through the panel and how the panel reads in architecture.
Facades & sunscreens
An even square grid reads clean from the street — press-locked square mesh is the architectural favorite for screens and balustrade infill.
Platforms & mezzanines
Square mesh spreads foot and pallet loads across both directions, so deflection stays even under moving traffic.
Trench & tree-pit covers
Small square openings resist heels and street debris while water keeps moving — 11 / 11 mm for pedestrian zones.
Stair treads & infill
Square grid lines stay aligned across a flight — treads, risers and guardrail panels read as one system.
Specifications
Square Layout Table & Panel Specifications
The layout table is built from the spacings we actually run. Clear opening equals pitch minus bar thickness, so bar size decides the true opening — with 5 mm bars, a 40 mm pitch leaves a 35 mm square.
| Construction | Bearing pitch | Cross pitch | Resulting openings |
|---|---|---|---|
| Welded, matched pitch | 30 mm | 30 mm | Fine square grid — tight open flooring |
| Welded, matched pitch | 40 mm | 40 mm | General square mesh for platforms |
| Welded, matched pitch | 60 mm | 60 mm | Open square grid — maximum drainage |
| Press-locked close mesh | 11 mm | 11 mm | Heel-proof near-square openings |
| Parameter | Range |
|---|---|
| Bearing bar | 20×3 mm to 100×8 mm, square-edged, plain or serrated |
| Bar spacing | 30 / 40 / 60 mm centers |
| Cross bar | Twisted square or round, pitch per specification |
| Square-mesh option | Matched pitch both directions; 11 / 11 mm press-locked |
| Panel width | Up to 1.25 m |
| Panel length | Up to 6 m |
| Materials | Q235B carbon steel · SS304 / SS316 stainless |

Materials & test documents
Every heat of Q235B, SS304 or SS316 enters production with its mill test certificate verified at goods-in — the first of our five QC stages. Panels leave with documentation, not promises:
- Mill test certificate to EN 10204 Type 3.1
- Factory inspection report with every shipment
- Declaration of Conformity prepared per order destination

FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
What does square grating actually mean?
In trade language the word points at geometry, not one product: square-edged bearing bars, square openings from matched bar pitches, or the twisted square cross bars standard on welded panels. Specify by bar size and both pitches — we confirm the reading in your quote.
Can you produce grating with square openings?
Yes. On welded panels we match the cross-bar pitch to the bearing-bar pitch at 30, 40 or 60 mm centers; on press-locked panels close mesh runs down to 11 by 11 mm. Clear opening equals pitch minus bar thickness, so bar size decides the true opening.
What is the lead time for square grating?
Samples ship in 5–7 working days and mass production runs 15–25 working days after drawing confirmation, both including hot-dip galvanizing. Rush production in 10–15 days is possible with a surcharge — ask in your quote.
